R ick Hemme led the first m oto of t he 105cc Mini Open with immediate he at coming from R &D teamma tes . Pat Galan and Mark Tomaselli . Ga lan pressed Hemme in th e co rners a nd took th e lead heading into t he loop. Tomaselli lost it in de ep sand a nd feU in behind th e battling duo of Terry Hampton and J o hner Kight. As th e brigade headed down the long sa nd straight. Ga la n's bike seized. putting him o ut of contention for the day and ou~ of a chance for p lacing in th e senes. He m me a nd Tomaselli swapped the le ad in the se cond moto , wit h Tomaselli taking the nag a mere bike length in front of Hem m e . T he ove rall went to Hemme . bu t when po ints were tallied . Tomaselli pi cked up the series win , wit h Hemme second a nd Kight third . As through most of the series . Pat Galan won back to back m o tos in t he Jun ior Cycle Modified race . lea ving th e actio n beh ind him. It took Edd ie H icks three laps to find his way a ro und Buddy Dumo, as they vied for the seco nd spo t. Duma clu ng to his back wheel and m oved back in , when H icks went down . As th ey headed fo r the tower. Dumo go t wobbly in th e sand ruts and Hicks passed him over the jump for another second finish . Galan walked away with three , three foot trophies fo r series win s in th e Stock and Modified Junior Cycl e Experts, and 9- 11 83cc Intermediates. Eddie Guajardo ' led a field of 24 , 125cc Ju niors for six laps until the white nag appeared and Troy King took ove r to win th e first moto. John H em m e held Cindy Du m a behind him to finish third . The seco nd time Hemme holesho t, bu t King grabbed it away and bui lt u p a comfortable lea d . Hemme had his work cu t out to rema in in seco nd but. after a few confronta tions. he settled into the pos it ion. Guajardo started in sixth and worked his way up . When he reached Fred Centon , th ey see-sawed back a nd forth and ran neck and neck to the nag for a photo finish . The officia ls ca lled it in Guajardo's favor . Riders were told to find old motorcycle parts. brown and green lea ves. rocks. pine cones. mistletoe . a jock strap. a bird feather . a set of handleba rs. old ca ns a nd wooden matches. Also. the folks had to bring in an unpopped balloon; quite difficult considering some of the brush y trails th e co urse went over. T he o the r thing worth a lot .of points was to find an old sh oe and a sock . T o find both ' was worth 300 points. Sepa ratel y the it ems were worth only 100 points. Another 100 pointer was a S1000 bill. Unfortunate, ly these bill s ca me out of a " LI FE" game. The second place finisher was Morton Fallgreen . Morton brought in his balloon , unpopped, and had also found a shoe and sock . What separated him from th e first place rider were small 50 and 20 point items. Everybody had a great time, and even if they didn't win all enjoyed the fun course and beautiful weather. There was one thing that nobody fou nd or at least didn't bring in . MA R . 18 The O ver the Hill Gang ro de again, this time at T -Car Speedway with nearly 20 0 riders turning out at what m a ny consider to be northern Neva da 's finest motocross facility. Mike Da rby won the 125cc Expert class with a pair of m oto wins . while Allen Berl uti topped both the O pen Expe rt a n d 25 0cc Ex pert cl asses, win ning three out of four m otos. Da rby pulled down a ho lesho t in the fir st 125cc m oto and d idn't see second plac e , except for one la p. all day. By th e thi rd la p of th e first m ot o Darby had a five second lead o n Mark Levrett and m ore than 10 seconds o n thi rd place Eri c Thaheld.
