Whiting's fourth place in the first moto set him back to second overall while Holley was able to claim the victory for the day. Each , however, was paid top dollar for their respective first by the per -mote payback rule. Ed Arnet , Suzuk imounted for Cycle · Products West , finished third again taking that position for the day . front four developed into a bunched up group with a pair of Suzukis fend ing off a duo of the Swedish marque. Things started to change on lap six when .Gerig moved by Tripes on the downhill for the lead. Tripes dropped off the pace after that and cruised around to finish fourth. Both Husk y riders made their wa y around Gerig on lap seven . Breker started to make a run at Sm ith as the winner of this race would be the big money winner, too . Breker was thwarted in his efforts , though , when his bike quite suddenly became a monoshock . The remaining unbroken shock was overworked in short order, allowing Smith to dance away to victory. In the first 250cc Pro moto, Chris Chaffee (Yam) made a fast break. leading for four laps until Breker squeezed by in the back section of the track . Visibly tired , Chaffee slowed to finish fifth . Breker wasn't able to pull away from the crowd , though, as Clint Hardick (Mai) used the next couple of laps to try his hand at leading. That was 'a ll Breker would allow ; after that , he got the lead back to come in the first moto winner. Tony Wanket (Yam) came up through the large pack to wrest second from Hardick on : the last lap wh ile Pal Hubbs (Mai) garnered fourth. Wanket came out of the first turn shuffle leading moto two .
