At the start of round one, Robert Gray (Yam) jumped into the lead . Lumbattis was in close second, however , and soon it was an all out battle for first. Not too far behind were Chris and Clint.Tarvin, both on Hondas, and having a brotherly duel for third with Chris holding the edge. Both duos were locked in close combat and for the first four la ps it could have been anybody's race. Lumbattis was the first to break the stalemate by passing Gray and then Clint followed suit a few la ps later and pushed his brother back to fourth. On his way to the checkered flag, Lumbattis bu ilt up a small lead over Gray who was closely followed at the finish by Clint. The second time out, Chris and Clint put themselves on top right from the start with Lumbattis and Gray lurking in their shadows. Chris started having trouble on the second lap and he let Clint by and . then both Lumbattis and Gray got him. Lumbattis didn't stop there and soon he was in the lead but Clint was still holding on to his tail in hopes of regaining the top spot. He never did, though, and the order held at the finish. In th e 250cc Novice class it was Mark Branch (Suz) who did all the winning. He led both motos from sta rt to finish while Jim Galatioto (Hus) and Larry Dysert (Kaw) diced for second. Galatioto came out ahead with Dysert and Sal Duarte (Hon) following . Results PEeWEE 11: t . Dustin Evans (Ita). PEE wee 12: 1. Tim Galatioto lSuzl: 2. Allen Brehm lSUlI ; 3. I What some pe ople will do to prove a point is amazing. For example, so sure was he of a stone-stock Suzuki RM-N's competition worthiness. that Mike Tripes rode one in each Pro class, working himself to a frazzle to earn a first , second and third after 84 long laps of racing. A quick visual check in the pits indicated that each of his bikes was , indeed, box-stock, down to the tires. An d he did have to work for his money today. Sunrise Valley Cycle Park, replacing National-occupied Sad d leback for the Continental Mote-sports Club-sanctioned DG Series this day, is a fast, rough tr ack in the desert. Its soft surface yielded more and la rger strength sapping whoops as the day progressed. First up on the Pro program were the 125s with Mike Toycen (Yam) coming out of an extremely tight and crowded first turn in front. Unfortunately, he took a rather spectacular tumble after the fi rst jump, letting Don Fuller (Suz) have his spot. . ' Fuller looked very fast , but Tripes was moving up after the first few laps. O n lap six, he stuffed it past Fuller in the right-hander after the bridge overpass and went on for the win . Bob Kline (Hon) found his way past Fuller on lap 10, as did Corki Moore aT) on the last la p in the fin~1 bumpy sweeper. Tripes went all the way in the second moto . Andrew Jefferson (Victorvil le Suz) wowed the crowd with his d isplay of speed which closed th e gap on Tripes until a fouled plug put him out on lap four. Fuller inhe rited se cond at that point. Toycen , however , was on his way up . methodically eating up distance. He bulldozed his way by Steve Dav is (Hon) in a turn , bounced by Fuller in th e back straight and cu t Tripes ' lead to two seconds at th e finish for a well -d eserved fourth overall. Moore and Fuller repeated th eir first mot" pla cings for second and third, resp ectively . Tripes figured his best bet for winning would be to open up an early lead and hang on , minimizing energy expended or unnecessarily used trying 10 catch up. At worst, the strategy would help ensure a good placing. In the first 250cc Pro moto, he pulled the hol eshot , avoiding the first turn fiasco and getting his third moto win of the day. Tim Lunde (Yam) , Pat Hubbs (TNT), Tony Wanket (Yam) and Chris Chaffee (Yam) followed him in. Lunde, eager to get back in the winner's circle, grabbed th e lead in moto two with Tripes right behind and looking for a way around him . Tripes dropped it in a turn on lap two after failing on an attempted pass . He got going again in seventh place, working up 10 third at the checkered. Wanket came up to challenge Lunde and made his move on lap seven , which resulted in Lunde stalling his motor in the same tu rn where Tripes went down. He hung on to second, though, and got the overall win . Tripes and Wanket picked up money for the next slots. H ubbs, seventh in the moto, tallied fourth . Bob Elliott (Suz) , seventh in the first rnoto after a tangle in turn one left him dead last, rode in fourth, good for fifth ove rall . Tripes was visibly tired by the time the 500cc Pros came to the line . His reflexes were up to par, however. After a false start, he beat everyone else to the first turn . Dave Williams (Mai) waitedfor the right chance to pounce on him for the lead, doing so o n lap eight and cruising to the win. Jefferson got third on his big bike. The first three were some distance ahead of Steve Walker (Yam) , Lee Ramage (Mai) and Scott Walker (Suz) . In the second moto, Jefferson and Tripes ta ngled, putting both far behind the pack. T ripes could only sit and fume watching the others ride away while friends frantically pulled a string of banners from his front wheel. Meanwhile, o ut front, Williams looked set to ride away with it . Coming up fast, though, was Alan Sm ith (H us) who limped to 12th on a flat rear tire in the first moto . He went by Williams in the last sweeper on lap six and just pulled away . Smith ended up sixth overall . Also hasten ing his way towards the front was Jefferson . He slipped in to thi rd by lap four and made up a little on Williams. Tripes pushed himself into fourth on la p 13, just ahead of Ramage. Jefferson and Tripes tied on points at six apiece, but Jefferson's third in the fina l moto beat Tripes out of second overall. In the Sportsman portion of the pr~gram, Scott Manning (Suz) took the u~of~cial lead in DG Series points by wmnmg the 125cc Intermediates Division 2. Just behind him are Stev~ Pfaff (Suz), second 125cc Division I Intermediate, and Leland Bacon (Suz), winner of that division. Rich Varner (Kaw) kept his po int lead in the 125cc Juniors with a third in Division 2 , won convincingly by Mark Howell on his Suzuki of California mount. Howell's win leap· frogged hIm into second in points. In th e 250 cc Intermediates, Rik Ni els en (Mai) put himself in the standings with a big win . Pete Murray (DMG) slipped into the point lead, unofficially. He is on e point in front of Mark Denning (Yam) and Bob Kerz (Hon), fifth and third, respectively , today . . _ . _ . _ . _ . - . _ . _ . _ . _ . Results MINI JR : 1. Perry Greene ISuzl; 2. Hames, Minning win big at Corona HM By Elaine J o nes .Photo by Dan Mahonyl Wizard Racing Photography CORONA , CA, MAR . 25 'For ty-three Pros from all over Cal ifornia , Nevad a and Arizona turned ou t to vie for a $600 purse equally divided between the 250cc _and O pen Money divisions on the ha lf mile and gave the spectators a sneak preview of how hot the competition is go ing to be this coming season. The 250cc riders had three heat races and two semis to make up the 10· man field and Ron Arlt , Dennis Camp, Terry Singleton, Jay Lewis, Chris Cannon, Mike Redding, Mike Garrison, Ross Klatt, Mike Minnig and Pete ' Hames rolled to the line. When the flag fell the battle was on. It was northern Ca lifornia 's Garrison who got the edge and went to the front with Hames , Minnig, Klatt and Redding close enough to throw a . blanket over. Garrison held the lead for one la p before the "Semi Flash:' Hames, slipped underneath and took Minnig with him . Hames pulled out all the stops as he tried to put some distance between himself and the rest of the field but Minnig, Ga rrison and Klatt kept the pressure on. O n the seventh lap Klatt, aboard his Premiersponsored Yamaha, found the chink in Garrison's armor a nd was able to get by to take over third . Minnig's Tortorelli Harley and Hames with his Bill's Pipes Yamaha were not such an easy task and as the checkered came out it was Hames, Minnig, Klatt and Garrison. Interesting no te is that both Hames and Ga rrison , who have proven t hemselves to be two of the hottest riders around, are both 14 and won't be eligible for their AMA Pro licenses for two years. . The O pen boys had two heats and two semis to set their field and when the qualifying was ove r it was Rich Volk , Danny Perkins. Mike Minnig, Dennis Briggs, Craig Armstrong, Bobby Sanders, Rob Selvy, Dylan Neihart , Doug Garrison and Randy G riffith who made the 15-lap main . At the start Perkins got the jump on the field as he powered h is "Dad" sponsored Yamaha to the front of the pack . Briggs , aboard his D&D Enterprises Harley , was second with the Tortorelli Harley of Minnig third and Sanders fourth . For six laps th e order remained th e same until Minnig dec ided it was time to move and he got under Briggs to take over second. Perkins was stretching his lead and looking very smooth . Minnig started closing the gap and a t the end of 10
