Craig Rens won th e 250cc Novice class - a fin e ride for his first desert race. Having time to lick wounds and repair machines , everyone was wired for the team race. Husqvarna MXer Mike McGowen , after being out with injuries, was back aboard his trusty Husky teamed with Jim Nichols. McGowen/Nichols set a hot pace for three la ps. Chip Howell , teamed with Rick Finge r, jumped in the lead and kept it away from all cha llengers. Bill T arling /j ohn Rogers charged ea rly in the ra ce b ut dropped to fifth by the en d . Don Mathews /Matt Ho pe (on a 125cc) were m ovin' on as th ey finis hed fou rt h among all the hotshoes. Senior teams Cecil Ho llenbeck/ Bruce Cornell fought a close one against Tom Brown / Ea rl Nic hols with on ly one spot between them at the finish . Father/ son team Don Seay, J r. and Don Sea y, Sr. finished between Hollenbeck /Cornell and Brown / N ichols for second in class . .
