Cavness,
Snorte/and, Dale
snowplow to CRC
MXwlns
By Keith Clemons
ORANGE, CA,JAN. 28
I have said many times that California Racing Club races come
hell or high water. I've seen Jack
Ba rbacovi run his club in 100 ·
plus degree heat and monsoon rains,
but never before have I seen a CRC
race in snow and hail. Last week
proved to be the exception. Jack and
his mighty band found themselves
freezing on the sides of Saddleback,
Su nd ay while the coldest weather to
hit Orange County motocross brought
an ons laught of hail and snow do wn on
them but, as always before, the race
went on.
The Open Pro' holeshot went to
Greg Draskovich who , rod e his DMG
prepped Ma ico out front . until
Wheelsmith's Mark Brooks crept up
from behind and nudged him off the
track. Brooks took over the lead on his
own Maico machine while'DflIISkoYich
.
recovered from running down the sid e
of an eigh t foot embankment. Meanwhil e , Scott Cavness stormed his
Suzuki by Brooks to steal the numbe r
on e spo t and held on to it to win th e
moto . Brooks wasn ' t ab le to hold
cont ro l of the second place position
eithe r 'as Steve Rawson soon ca ptu red
t hat po sit ion and Brooks fi ni shed
third .
Coming out of the second moto start
Brooks copped the holeshot but only
held ' the lead for half a lap when
Ca vn ess aga in bl ew him a way.
Anaheim Suzuki-sponsored Cavnes s
di ced with Brooks all the way to th e
finish but even with the tig ht interplay
the final positions we re Cavness,
Brooks, and this time Rawson picking
up th ird. Cavness was, of course, th e
over all 'win ne r with Brook s tak in g
second pla ce pay and Rawson third.
Pete Snorteland was th e big money
winner in the 250cc Pro race .
Snorteland started middle of th e pack
in both races but won each with a n
easy 15·20 second lead over th e other
20 'Ddd Pros in his race. Dou g Renno
took two second place finish es but not
with such ease as Snorteland. In the
first moto he rod e neck and neck wit h
Rich Franklin and Mark Denning and
was in th ird place beh ind Franklin
until the final lap when he broke by to
finish ahead of Franklin by onl y two
bikelengths. When Snorteland waved
goodbye to the second moto boys the
race fell to Steve Potts, Ted Hoyt and
again Doug Renno. Renno was behind
in the competition until the second to
the last lap when he pulled Potts to
take the second place position. Hoyt
also made it by Potts for a thi rd .
Overall the win was Snorteland's with
Renno picking up second and Hoy t
placing third .
Craig Dale rode his Suzuki Westsponsored machine through two
winning motos in the 125cc Pro race:
Cole Bros.' Ed Arnet finished second
followed by Dan Shaw in the firs t moto
but Matt Tedder moved into second
place in moto number two followed by
Ed Arnet, Final positions were Dale in
first. Arnet in second and Tedder in
third.
Marty M oates battled SSM victor T on y DiStefano until a flat set In.
