ORANGE, CA ,JAN . 14
When you mix a sudden down pour, Saddleback's unique soil
composition and a group of raeers , there are only two options.
One is absolute bedlam and the other,
bravery ,
cunning
and
sheer
determination. The California Racing
Club and Saddleback Park's crew
chose the latter when rain disrupted
the second series of motos.
As the track announcer u rged
everyone to move their vehicles out of
the park, riders eased themselves off
the track, loaded up and with great
care maneuvered assorted mini trucks
and vans sideways through the mud
and down the hills. One problem
remained. How to get out of the park?
The Saddleback Park crew came up
with a brilliant solution : Cut a hole
through the fen ce and shrubbery. halt
traffic and escort racers out onto the
roadway. At last count, everyone got
home .
The 250cc Pros were one of the
lucky classes with two uninterrupted
mo tos. Tying things up neatly with a
pai r of wins was Bob Stem, riding for
Yamaha Motor Corporation .
At the start of th e firs t moto Stem
led from the line. He had Andy Guth
to worry about , however. Guth sta rt ed
oun in fourth .a nd rapidly worked his
way int o second, closing on Stem and
qu ickly narrowing his lead. In third ,
Mark Garrison set out after Guth but
th ere was no catching him. By the end
of the moto , mere inches separated
Guth from Stem and Garrison was
firm in third.
By the second moto the rain had
start ed . and present ed an e n tirely
different track situ a tio n.

out after Draskovich. Guth soon
moved into fourth and a tight battle
continued for the lead . Ga rr ison , who
had been in fifth, moved like lightning
and took charge of the number two
slot with Jackson holding down third.
When the checkered flag signaled
the end , mud -coated and anxious ,
Stem emerged with lOp honors ,
Garrison took home second place loot
and third overall went to Guth .
