Almost 60 125cc Intermediates were split up into three d ivisio ns to determine the d ay's top competitors , with each division running two mo tos. The first 125cc Intermediate detach ment was taken by Steve Pfaff, winner of both motos. Za p a ta Espinoza holeshot the first moto, but Pfaff slipped by on the fourth lap for the win, and the secon d moto was a wire ~o-wire victory for the Garden Grov e redhead, followed by Kevin Hopkins and Espinoza. Division two saw Tom McAllister and Matt Whiting split moto wins, but McAllister's second moto victory over Whit ing , who was riding a 100cc which he took the IOOcc Expert class earlier on, gave him the overall. Whiting's moto victory was an exciting one that took him from his ninth place start to the lead at the whit e flag . Brian Holdren picked ' up third with his 5·3 day. The smallest division was the third, but the class action was still fierc e. Je ff Qualls ran the first moto with a wireto -wire victory over Eric Baker and Steve Hutchins , but H utchins took the holeshot the second time and came up with the overall victory over DMG' s Randy Ross, who went 4-4 , and Qualls, who drop ped to seventh. Baker came in ' 13t h the second mot o for sixth overall. Twenty-seven riders were on th e gate for eac h d ivision of 250cc Intermediat es . In the first grou p . Mark Parkerson picked up a well deserved overall victory with a 2·2 ride. Craig Wessel took the lead early in the first moro and held it to the wire ahead of Parkerson and Jim Cummingham, but the second round found Bob Schulz the winner after slipping around early leader Parkerson and second-overall Wessel. Division two of the 250cc Intermediates was the most actionpacked class of the day. In the first moto Jeff Tracy took the holeshot ahead of Tracy Travis, Mark Page and Mike Foley, and at the end of the lap Kevin Willis and Neil Christman were in the 4-5 slots. Christman gassed it up to second on the very next lap , and in one more he was the new leader. Tom Ross was also on the move, running third after his mid-pack start, and he picked off Jeff Tracy for second on the fourth lap. One lap later Ross was trying to close up on Christman, but as he crested the second jump of the front straight his Honda pitched him off. When the checkers flew it was Christman, Brett Coulson (who came from Ilth),Juan Benavidez and Ross. Moto two saw Ch ristm an take the lead on the first lap with Benavidez a close second, Jerry Gordon third , Jay Marcezl fourth and Ross and Coulson 5-6 . On the second lap Benavidez was right behind Christman, but got off before he could get around. Four laps later Christman found Benavidez back on his tail , but again Benavidez went down . Finally, on the last lap, Benavidez picked his line, caught Christman, and went by for the win and second overall behind Christman. Coulson moved up to fourth for th ird overall. R"U~ . MINI JR: 1.
