DEC . 14 In spite of th e flu that took its toll on a lot of th e younger riders, a good turnout of Pros were on hand to close out the '78 flat track season at Corona . The "Sim i Flash ." Pete H imes had just gotten over his bout with th e bu g but it certainl y didn't show in his riding that he had ever been sick. The 250c c Money hal f mil e saw Hames go out on top and set a pace the other riders wer e hard put to keep up with. Lillie Mike Redding nailed down second and held more experienced riders at bay all the wa y. Don Waffle got off the line th ird but Gordon Loar slipped under him on the third lap and held him to fourth . With no short track: Money race, Hames decided to pit his Bill's Pipes 250cc Yamaha aga inst the Open Money boys on the half mile and the rest reads like a fairly tale . Off the lin e came Mike Minnig with Hames second and Wayne Rainey third . Pete put a move on Minnig coming out of turn four that gave him the lead on the second lap. Minnig came right back and reclaimed the front spot on the next lap and held it until the fourth lap when Hames again came down low .and tight out of four and got the edge he needed . From there on out it was a com plete rout by.rhe 13-year·old as he left his competition in th e dust. On th e 10th la p Ra in ey got by Mi nnig and with five laps to go sta rt ed to close the gap but time ran ou t and he sertled for second with Minnig third . Danny Perkins fourth and john Lundgren and Steve Oort fifth and sixth respectively. Rob Selvy climbed aboard Don Waffle's big 750cc Yamaha and took a crack at the Open Expert half mile against Steve Oort , Besides having -an arm that was totally useless after his 10 lap main he was rather pleased with himself as he went wire to wire for the wm . Mike Redding didn't go home empty handed as he came from behind to win the 250cc Amateur/Exert half mile. Don Waffle took the lead when the flag dropped with Gordon Loar second and Redding third . Redding. who is about the size of a small jockey. wrestled his bike under Loar on the second lap to move to ' second and pulled the same trick on Waffle the next time around to claim the lead. Don Remp and Randy Howard shared the 250cc Novice wins. On the short t rac k . it was a duel between Howard and Robert Yorba . Yorba took the lead off the line and held Howard for four laps before Howard was a ble to get an inch ahead of him . Yorba came right back and won the drag ra ce for th e line to put himself on top . Howard was not to be denied and back he came, this time it was for good and he brought it home. On th e half mil e it was a wire to wire romp for Remp with Howard second and Yorba sidel~ned after five laps. Results SHORT TRACK 250cc NOV: 1. Randy Howard lV am); 2. Robert Vorbe IC·AI; 3.
