Leading the first 250cc Pro cha rge up the famous Saddleback sta rt ing hill was Honda -mounted J im Gibson but Gillman took th e lea d awa y on the do wn hill. Tarantino held off Gibson for five la ps before going wide in a turn and lerr ing Gibson slip by . Gibson then really began to charge and ac tually closed somewhat on Gillman but when the checkers came out Gillman was th ere first with a comfortable lead . Gillman was the overall winner with second going to Gibson and third to Tarantino. Team Kawasaki's new 125cc ace. Jeff Ward . rode to back to back moto wins to take top money in the 125cc Pro class. Ward looked very comfort a ble on the new Kawasaki as he won both races by a good margin . Andy Kirker brought his Yamaha up weeks wit ho ut racin g is m or e than m ost en t h usiasts ca n ta ke a nd this bunc h was ready to go . For one rider it was his first race in severa l months. T ommy Hod gin of Redlands Su zuk i was bitten on th e a nkle by a mot or cycle ea rly last su m mer and ha s been walk ing ar ound in plaster ever sin ce. But th e ca st was gon e Sunday a nd he was back 10 his usu al posit ion on lOp of th e 125cc Novice class. In th e ea rly laps of moro one, it was Dou g Da vison (Suz).lead ing th e way whil e Hod gin an d J ohn Dimm itt ( Yam) followed . Davison was selli ng a n excellent pace u nt il t he fifth la p whe n he dropped out of t he race with bike troub les. From the re on in , it was all Hod gi n's. Dirnm itt finis hed a close seco nd with J eff Ca m arigg (Suz) third and Joey T homas (Suz) fourth . Rou nd two saw Hodgi n pu ll the holeshot 'a nd never let go . Dim m itt held secoad a ll the way wh ile Ka rl J ohnson (Ya m ) batrl ed with Davison for third . J ohnson event ua lly ca me out on top, sec uring third place ho no rs for him self. Davison once aga in ra p into t ro u b le and wound u p in l Oth place . As usu al . t he 250c c Pro class ' was very close . Cra ig Gorm ley (Yam) held the lead a t t he end of lap one with Mike Dickherber (Suz) in a close second ahead of Dave Eropkin (Ya m) and Llo yd Burk (Yam) . Phil Thor sten sen (Ho n) and Mark Ellis _ (Yam ) both su ffered from poor starts .. but soo n t hey were knifing th eir way th rough th e pack. By the fifth lap Thorstensen was riglit behind Eropkin in fourth place and pushing hard , Ell is, however, was having problems with his rear brake and he began to slow down , In th e meantime the lead had switc he d hands. Dickherber ha d passed Gormley just seconds before th e Yamaha rid er low side d in a turn . Gormley managed to remount quickly and on ly lost two places. As th e ra ce
