CA In the enclosed lett er, A mold states that any Horney Toads member entering a race during 1979 will donate 11 per race, wh ich will th en be forwarded to the Duck 's Attack Fund. " . Editor Maicos forever I read the article writt en by Jim Gianatsis in Volume XV , 147 , Dec . 6. 1978 and just abou t went out of my mind . H is comments about th e 1978 Maico Magnum 400 and 450 wer e way out of line. At .the beg inn ing of his art icle it sounded like he reall y liked to ride the Maico and by th e end of h is article , it sounded like th e Mai co was a pile of junk. Its quite evid ent that the author has never owned a Mai co , for if he had his article would have been on the positive sid e instead of calling it a pile of junk - in so many words . I have ridden al most every 250, 400 , and 450cc MXer that is on the course tod ay and u nt il I had the pleasure of ridi ng a Maico I d idn't know th a t motocross was so m uch fun. I can ride m y Maico Magnum 40 0 and make every m istake in the book b ut that bi ke is very forgivi ng a nd wit h no effort at all it straightens out to correct my mistakes . My I I -yea r-old son races a 250 Maico Ma gn um and, speaking of power with a long band , he is never less than fourth at th e start and with handling ease plus power. he is always in the top eight. O u t of all the moro- cross bikes we have owned. the Maicos are more maintenance free than any of them . I want to say that if the Maico factory was a 20 million dollar a year factory like Yamaha , th ey could afford to sponsor as many top pro· rid ers as they wanted to - but they aren't! If they were . I would say that 15% of the top riders would be aboa rd a Maico . JAMES E. RAGSDALE Colorado Springs,. CO B-to-V commitment encouraging The 1978 Ba rsto w-to-Vegas Trail ride was a tremendously encouraging a nd productive demonstration of determined .commitment to off- road motorcycli ng . T he years of BLM mis management , arrogance, and di scrim inatory decisions h ave produced a dyn amic gr oup of ac tively-committed, life-long desert ri ders. This ride counted because it de monstrated that people wa nt to ride motor ' cycles in the desert - a lot of peo ple . people to significantly Eno ugh influence the political system of which the BLM is part . And the riders on the B-to-V trail are only the tip of a large . iceberg beginning to surface. We've always been committed desert riders , but until recently it has only been a state of mind . We were not actively committed. The reason was leadership. We have not had good leadership in the past. That's why the $45 ,000 in the District S7 Legal Defense Fund is still uncommitted to . the defense of our sport. We therefore remained a disorganized group of ind ivid ua lists without well -defined goals and specific p lans and timetables for reaching them . Times are ch anging. Dyn am ic leadership is emerging . J im We lls, Bo b Hayes, Rick Sieman , t he P ha nt om Du ck and others are giving our commitm ent an active direction . Leadership takes co u rage . When you sta nd up and step forwa rd, you lose your low profile. The challenge to these leaders is threefold : I . Encourage motorcyclists to com mit their time and their money to the spo rt and t he friendships wh ich flourish because of it : 2. Develop detailed plans for gett ing riders actively involved in the political system so that specific goals can The Dist rict J7 Legal Defense Fun d. in a D· J7 me eting Dec. 7, decided to hire the Duck 's lawyer and go after the B rt o - V and Check Chase races . . .
