AQMP v ictory . We . th e motorcyclists who are concerned about the Air Quality Management Plan , might like to thank the pr esident of the Motorcycle Industry Council , Mr . Alan Isley as well as his . wife and the research done by Pam Annette . The MIC gave the final blow to the AQMP on their plans forSection H 64 , which dealt with smog controls on two-strokes by 1983 . One of the Boa rd members , Orange County Supervisor P.hilip L. Anthony, said he felt he doesn't need to consider th is issu e anymore. If you would like . express your views to the AQM P anyway, and drop a line to the MIC at 400 Birch St.. Su ite 101, Newport Bea ch , CA 92660 , and tel l 'em thanks for their dedications; it was beau tifu l. Kawasaki's Roger Hagie and Husky's Nils -Arne Nillson were present also. Both events proved a d isaster from an organiza tional standpoint:-T he promoters were unable to effectively handle th e some 600 riders in attendance. Both events were termed " typ ical" 10 NorCal motocross , requiring you to arrive at dawn (7 a.m.) to ride two laps of practice and two, four- or five-lap motos before su nset (5 p .rn .) . The race at Plymouth in particular has to be termed a disaster since only one five lap rnoto was run in each class all day. The track was unusually dangerous with fifth -gear , whoop-filled sand straights lined by unfenced spectators, and narrow 8ยท10 foot wide wooded sections through unprotected trees. Injuries proved numerous , causing many delays for litera lly hours on end as the track was smoothed , rerouted, and finally short ene d in half. Only one ambulance was on hand which brought about long delays again while it made its regu lar runs 10 t he hospital. After having missed m y two laps of practice because of carburetor problems , I event u a lly got 10 rid e m y one five-lap ra ce on the 'shortened cou rse during th e long 10 hour day. I will never again attend a simi larily conducted event , nor will I'm su re, a lot of ot her riders. It's obvious that the promoters were trying to cram as many riders int o on e day's program as possible while keep ing track preparation and operating expenses as low as possible. Cont inua tion of such policies by promoters su ch as those at Sears Po int and Plymouth can only eventually lead 10 the down fall of local ra cing in th e area . I, for one , would not mind paying an increased entry fee from the present $8 -$10 for Amateur riders to $15 to help the promoters with their expenses. But in return I would expect a two day program for Amateur and Expert riders to allow everyone longer 20-30 min ute motos and enough practice. Additionally, I'd expect the track to be prepa red to th e poi nt tha t it is, at the very least , safe 10 race on . Wi tho ut these changes, loca l motocross in these areas can only decrease in popu lari ty, J IM GIANATS IS Biloxi, MS Published letters do not necessarily reflect the position of Cycle News, Inc.
