NOV .-5 If there ever was a rider who was well liked and admired by his fellow racers that rider was Dave Koch. Dave was 19 years old last spring when he fell victim to a poorly marked r a ilr oa d crossing in San Bernardino on his street bik e. While D a'v~ is gone now . his m~mory was never stronger than at DeAnza Cycle Park last Sunday where a healthy crowd of motocrossers and desert racers turned out in his honor. The dil). started off with the presentation of a srnemorial plaque to Mr. and Mr. Koch and then it was down to racing : The first race of the morning was the Pro race, Phil Thorstensen (Hon) jum~ into an ' early lead and it looked like no one else could touch him r'o n the three-mile track as he pull~ a -~O · ~co ~d lead on the first lap.. Tom Karos (Suz) held down a dis 'an t second with Jim Lowe on his Honda-pow~r~d Maico right behind. It' '!wa s on the second lap that Th~rstens~n started to notice the dam ping in his front end beginning to fad~. At first he paid no attention to it ;' but later it began to pos~ a real probl~m. His pace began to slow a nd Karos passed him on the next lap. The Honda rider was still setting a ' fast pace, but all his hopes of catching back up were destroyed when his front forks carne totally unglued. Thorstensen went over the handlebars . bUI was relatively uninjured, The bike was 'anoth~r story. It turned out that tbe cause was a small allen head bolt that:cam~ out of the bottom of one of the sliders and put too much pr~re on the other fork leg . The front wheel came off and it was an instant endo for Thorstensen. ' Now .the battle for first was strictly between Lowe and Karos. Karos held a ' sm all lead right down to the last couple of laps . then he low-sided in a tum and killed the Suzuki's engine. Lowe cruised on by to first overall while Karos frantically tried to restart his bike. Karos was still the first 250cc rider to cross the line. The 125cc Pros were on the second wave to get off the lin e;. and it was Craig Gormley who got the; jump. But. as it has been the case sq pften with Gormley, he seized on the second lap and lost the lead to Pat Hubbs (Suz). who held it all the way to the end, Robert Gray (Yam) , never , l~ too much ground to Hubbs and ~ too~ second, tT he last race of th e day was just for fun . Tea m races provid e rno rocr ossers with a rare opp ortu nity to pitch in ' toget her to win a race. Karos and Thorstensen got together on Ka ros' Fairing.
