Leon Baird (171 and top DeAnza 2&Occ Intermediate Don Jackaon. Jack.on won both moto8. Suzuki and were expected to run awa y with the event. But that just wasn't the case , David Stewart and Don Jackson are two hot Intermediates that were never told that they were supposed to be slower than the Experts. Right from the start they hung on to ' Karos and Thorstensen. And then. in the last half of the race, Thorstensen went down and Jackson took the lead . Karos continued to race with Stewart after the switch was made, but he ju st couldn't make up enough ground. On the very last lap . Jackson was once again in the d river 's seat and Thorstensen wasn 't mo re than three feet awa y. The checkered flag saw them fin ish neck and neck with J ackson still holding on to a slight edge. A finish that close in a 90 minute race is rare 10 say the least. Results . . MINI NOV: 1. Joe Klaeger; 2. .Grllll Harrington; 3. Todd P.ker. MINI INT 1. Don Sigrist; 2. Scon Amy; 3. Jackson jams In DeAnza's mud By Ron Lawson SUN NYMEAD , CA , NOV. 12 A layer of sticky mud covered DeAnza 's hilly MX course, but tha t was hardly enough to stop W indsong Enterprises' Don 18 Jackson (H us) f rom sweep ing to two straigh t victories in the 250cc Inter med iate class. Brandon Baldwin from Red la nds Suzuki , David Stewa rt (Yam) ; a nd Ro bert Rip ley (Hon) all planned to ta ke hom e top honors, bu t it was Ja ckson , who is usually fou nd on to p of the 125cc Int ermed ia te class, who mastered t he d ifficult conditions best. At the st a n of moto one, it was Rip ley in fro nt , bu t before on e lap was com pleted Bal d win took over , Rip ley bega n to taper his pace early in the race, apparently ha ving difficulties with th e gooey track conditions. This ga ve Baldwin an im me diate lead and allo wed Jackson to slip by into second place . At the halfway point Baldwin was still in command, but he was beginning to slack off a little. "My bike was acting real strange," he commented later , "Every time I opened it up , it felt like it was going to sieze. " Bal dwin rode the malfunctioning scoot for one more lap and then pulled off the track . Jackson was then in the lead with nobody within striking distance. He wen t on to the moto win ahead ·of Stewart, Ripley and Da n Moore (Mai). . The next round started with Baldwin gett ing the holeshot. O nce again he opened up a strong lea d and thi s time, his bike was running right. Jackson passed Ba n Hitt for second place on th e third lap, b ut then his' ad van ce came to a halt du e to Baldwin's already healthy lead . Bein g the type of rider that doesn't take unnecessary chances, J ackson elected to concentrate on hol ding down second place, which would give him the over all win . The lead, however, was dropped into his lap when . Bald win fell near the end of the race , Overall results went to Jackson , Stewart, and Ripley. The 250cc Pros were mastered by another rider who is more accustomed to small bores. Craig Gormley (Yam ) was unstopable as he roared to two wins against Mark Rhea (Mai) and David Hopkins (Suz). Burtt unbeatable atCoronaMX By Ron Lawson CO RONA, CA, NOV. 10 While the threatening bla ck - The 2&Occ Beginners broke the bend a~ Corona. Next week: a metal gate. clouds over Corona R aceway might have scared away a few of the less faithful riders , the ones that came out to the Friday night motocross were rewarded with perfect track conditions. Mother nature's capable hand watered the course just the right amount early in the day and then politely stopped at racetime . It 's no big thing when Dan ny Bu n t (Suz) wins the I 25cf Pro class . But this time he went home with top money in both the 250 and 125cc classes . Bum got the holeshot of 250cc moto one. but Joe Plante (Hon) managed to pass him in the first tum . The two riders then started to walk away from the rest of the pack, engaged in a handlebartangling, elbow -bumping battle. On the third lap Bu rtt m ade his move and rec overe d the lead . Plante never really gave up, but he was not changi ng . quite so hard at the end of the moto . Dave Coyle (Yam) took third ahead -of Pryor Cam p bell (Suz). T he ne xt ro und was more of the same. Bu rtt grabbed the early lead , but Plante was rig ht on his tail. Lap after lap , it was the same. Bu rn held on to a small lead with Plante waiting in the background for any opponun· ity, Bu rtt went on to win the race and the overall with Plante second and Coyle third. In the 125cc bout, it was once again Burtt on top. He grabbed the lead at the stan of moro one and never let go . Behind him , there was a good race for second between Jim DeGaine (Yam) and Rob Miller (Suz). DeGaine and his Yamaha , however. were working good together and by the end of the race, Mille r was a safe distance behind. In the second moro , Burt t was again in front but DeGaine ran into diffi culties. O n the first lap, he ran off the track, losing valuable time to Miller who ·was in second . DeGa ine was hot, though . and within a few laps he made up the lost ground and put himself back in second behind a long gone Bunt. Overall resu lts went Bu n t, DeGaine , Miller, Robert Ellis (Suz) and Sta n Galver (Suz) ..
