favorite to its long DNF list.
As Bierman moved into third, he
too realized he had a fight on his
hands. Don Young who came from far
back in the pack, seemed to get his
second wind and his fin ish was in
Bierman's dust.
The Mini race was won by Kevin
Senn who prefers this type of course
which he describes as a "motocross
Grand Prix : ' A fast you ng desert
rider, Mark Heth, was hot on Senn's
tail until the last lap. Just as Heth
passed the white flag , Shannon
Shablin made his move. Shablin
fought Heth over that last lap, and as
they came in for the checkered, it was
Shablin in second while Heth aced out
Kevin 's little brother, Keith Senn, for
third.
o The 250cc class was won by Up
Tire's Tom Bell, but he worked for it.
Danny Sanchez, who is sponsored by
Pasadena
Super
Cycles ,
and
Competition Cycle rider Craig Adams,
were right with him through the first
lap. After Adams' KTM went sour,
Sanchez and Bell literally thrilled the
crowd with their side by side antics. In
the seventh lap , Sanchez shared
Adams' fate and Bell took his Husky in
for the win.
Behind Bell, three close fri ends,
Steve Blakely . Warren Barr and John
Taylor were showing each other
ever yt hing they had ever learned
about racing motorcycles. After it was
allover and they had finished in that
order. they decided to cool off at the
beach.
.The Open rac e featured three riders
who enjoy riding against each other as
much as fans enjoy watching. Wh ile
Craig Adams and Mark Asbury diced
for the lead. Wayne Martin was eating
their dust.
Adams' KTM had apparently
overcome its earlier problems and was
now beginning to monopolize the lead.
In the fifth lap, sweeper, Mark
Vincellette reported that Asbury's
Husky had seized and Martin was
finishing second in front of Randy
Hollenbeck. Vincellette also reported
that SRA official George Ehrman was
spotted . leaning over his bike while
intimate friends picked cactus out of
his bottom side. Seems George
overshot a tum and landed in a sitting
position atop one of the many prickly
bushes that inhabit the area .
The 8 I · 200cc class finalized the
day's events and it was Jeff "Goat"
Hollier in the lead. Hollie's lead was
short lived when Vanya "The Mad
Russian" Samarin took over. The
Russian was definitely the most
.popular rider of the day and skillbest
describes the ride that gave him' the
win over Rick Rogers and Hollie, who
finished in that order. -
WIlliams takes two

By Elaine Jones
CORONA, CA, SEPT. 29
Shirt sleeve summer weather
and a big turnout of riders made
for an exciting evening of motocross racing under the lights at
Corona Raceway. ' The saying the grass is greener on
the other side held true for the Pros as
they saw the new section of course
made for the Sporumen and asked the
Racing Di~or ~f they could ta~e a
crack at it In heu of the stadium
whoop·de·doos . With pennission
granted they were off and running. It
was David Williams' night as he
cleaned house in the Open Pros , going
two for two over Paul Sedler. Jumping
from one bike to another he was back
on the line for the always hotly
contested 250cc Pro go.
Off the line in the first moto it was
Redland's Suzuki/Spectro sponsored
Marty Miller leading with Honda mounted Terry Tietz and Bill's Cycle's
Darryl Lumbattis in the 2 ·~ spots .
Wheelsmith's Williams was way back
in 10th with a lot of distance to make
up . By the end of the first lap Williams
had picked off Clinton Tarvin, Phil
Thorstensen, Randy Collier and Dane
Wigington to lie in sixth. The end
of the second lap saw David Robinson
and Lumbattis fall to Williams' attack
as he made his way toward the top .
Matt Devich had been busy and with
the demise of Lumbattis had taken
over third just ahead of the charging
Williams, but couldn't withstand the'
onslaught of Williams who at this
point was like a runaway train. Tietz
was now the only rider who remained
between front runner Miller and
Williams and Williams disposed of
him in short order. Miller went on
the defensive and with three laps to
go held Williams at bay to take the win.
The second moto saw Miller go out
on top with Williams right on his
exhaust and Tietz in third. Three laps
went down before anybody could do '
any place swapping and then it was
Thorstensen moving from fifth to
third, slipping by Devich and Tietz. As
they headed into the fourth lap
Williams moved on Miller and came
up with the lead. Now it was Miller's
tum to pla y catch up as Williams
opened up quite a bit of daylight . As
the laps went down , Miller slowly but
surely closed the gap. The white flag
came out with Miller in a posit ion to
strongly challenge Williams. As they
hit the infield both of them turned up
the wick but it was Williams at the
checkered, taking the overall from
Miller on a tie-breaker. Devich, with a
~·4, was good enough for third one
point ahead of Thorstensen.
Redlands Suzuki's Danny Burtt ran
his win streak to three in a row as he
took the 125cc Pro with a perfect 1·1
score, leading both motos from start to
finish .
Mini Beginner Daren Orlandos
picked up his graduation papers. to the
Novice division and Steve Peterson did
likewise in the 125cc Beginner
division.
