OCT. 1 New track changes this week made the already popular Mountain High track even more challenging with' a new uphill and many off chamber turns. Only 170 riders showed up for this week's race, but that did not slow the action down any. Chip Chapman (Suz) took 125cc Pro class overall, but not without a fight . The first moto was all Chapman's, as he wheeled his Suzuki away for an easy win . Following in second was a battle between David Manhire (Suz) and John Nelson (Hanford Suz) . The two battled for second for eight laps until fourth place rider, Andy Montaeo (Suz) caught and passed both for second place. They finished; Chapman first. Montaeo second. Manhire third. and Nelson fourth . Moto two was a different story. Manhire grabbed the holeshot , followed by Nelson with Chapman a distant third. Second place finisher, Montaeo. was stuck In mid pack. Manhire led five laps of the 10 lap moto with Nelson glued to Manhire's rear fender. On lap six. Nelson made his move on the downhill and outgassed Manhire for fint place. Nelson pulled out a slight five second lead and seemed to have it sewed up until Chapman caught Manhire and they set sights on Nelson. With less than two laps to go, Chapman made his move only to spin and lose second but later take the overall. Second went to Nelson and third to Manhire. In 250cc Pro action , Jay Haroutunian (Summer' Suzuki of Fresno) took the first moto holeshot and pulled out a slight lead over Don Franklin (Mai) and Milan Garrett (Garrett's MX Shop). On lap three. Franklin closed the gap on Haroutunian , and Garrett did the same to Franklin, It was a three way battle for the lead with Franklin coming out on top on lap five. As Franklin pulled out a lead. Haroutunian and Grrett fought for second place. Garrett made the pass and seemed to have second secured. On the last lap, Garrett lost control of his Montesa on top of the hill and almost lost it. This brought Haroutunian within a bikelength as Garrett came back on the track . Haroutunian was unable to pass as they finished. - Moto two saw Haroutunian out front with the holeshot again . It did not last as long. as Franklin passed after one lap for the lead. One lap later, Garrett passed Haroutunian and the two started the battle again for second place: On lap five, going over a fast right hand jump, Garrett landed sideways and landed on his head . This was all Haroutunian needed to assure him of second overall behind double moto winner, Franklin. Third overall went to Greg Fraizer (Hon) riding in at a consistent 5-3 day. An injured Gennady Liubimsky was on the gas Sunday while winning 410cc Production in the last AFM points race of the year at Sears Point. Liubimsky. who had skinned his arms in a previous crash, led from the first lap and stretched out his lead. A battle developed for second between Marc Salvisberg (Old Uncle Gaylord's RD!l50) and Dale Alexander (Team Cheap/Berkeley Yam RD350) with Salvisberg eventually pulling away and Alexander dropping out. Meanwhile, Bob Lugliani (San Mateo Yam/Con-tinental RD350) and Lewis Vallerga (Palo Alto Yamaha RD400) were going at it for sixth place. Salvisberg tried to close the gap on IT' Gen during the closing laps of the CI race, but Liubimsky's lead was too large. Larry Titus took third at the0 checkered. Gennady's ,win. coupled • with Alexander's DNF, gave the Harry , Hunt-sponsored rider a slim lead in 0 overall points going into the final q points races of the year at Ontario and Riverside. " Dave Garoutte continued his lat~ M season charge with a hard fought victory over Glen Shopher in 250cc . GP . The opening laps saw Shophero:> (Shoei/Farm House Rest. TZ250) and • Garoutte (DKG TZ250) dicing back • and forth , with Garoutte popping nice wheelies over tum three. By lap three Dave had established a two - bikelengtli~ lead . Said Glen afterward , " (tu rn) seven was greasy and so was three. •I"Y' just blew it . no excuses. We'll see how it goes at Ontario." Bill McGrill. the Y) man to beat in 200ccGP. rounded ou t lIZ the top three. 0 Harry Klinzmann (Mr. AI's Rest.. Yl TZ750) jumped out in the lead on the, Y opening lap of 750ccGP and was nev .~ L passed. The race featured several nonGP Superstreet bikes entered for no points, but the exotica was clearly superior after the TZ's of Gil Martin. Bruce Hammer and Kurt Kritikos pulled away from the Streeters. Lightwei~ht Superstreet saw Tom Chew win his fourth race in a row and fifth of the last six races here at Sears Point. Tom again led from the start, but could not pull away from John Williams. Williams (Bill Smith Racing 398ccYam) had just purchased some .s fresh horsepower and was suddenly in the thick of things , much to the distress of Nick Theroux (San Mateo Yam SR500). Danny Coe , the San Fernando Flash racing for Graham Sheet Metal (RD350). finished in fourth place. Chew. whose Smokamoto Productions Yamaha has been awesome this year. is leaving in November for China to compete in the q 'Macau Grand Prix. J;? Pat Eagan (South Coast Honda b 845cc Suz) led Open Superstreet at the • onset, followed closely by Kerry BryantJ (Yosh imura/Goodyear Kaw Z·l) and Steve Epstein (Lee Ent. Kaw Z·I). r. Kerry languished in second and third ' place for a few laps. then turned the throttle up to full grunt and pulled away . Eagan beat Epstein to the flag for second. Bryant's record at Sears 0'
