XR-75 winners decided at CMC/ Alba MX Series finale By Mark Kariya CARLSBAD, CA , AUG , 27 The last race of the Alba Honda XR-75 Series came down to the wire Sunday at Carlsbad. Except for 500cc Intermediate winner Chris White (Yam ), all five other classes in this Continental Mote-Sport Club-sanctioned series had more than th eir share of tight, furious racing, luck and anx ious moments . White , winner of four events and second in another, got win number five and one of the XR-75s destined for each class winner. Wayne Walther (Pen ), despite three straight wins , was not as consistent in the series as fell ow 500cc Junior Brad Thompson (Ma i) wh o won the first three races and took three seconds to pick up his XR. David Fisher's (Esc) second overall in the 250cc Intermediates today got him an XR by a single point over Scott Johnson (Hon). Bruce Ashmore (Ya m ), leader coming into today's event , got a second in the first mota behind Fisher. . but a second moto mishap forced him to fly from last to fifth , not quite what he needed. The 250cc Junior leader Gary Chaidez (C -A) could just see his chances for an XR blown away as a loose swingarm held him back to a sixth in moto one. He nearly developed ulcers in the second moto as a crash dropped him to 17th. Chaidez worked his way back up to 10th at the finish for seventh overall and managed to cling to the points lead and XR , The second rnoro of the 125cc Interrnedia res provided the best race of the day . Mike Toycen (Yam) had -a . scant one po int lead over Andy Northrup (SO P) and won the first moto with Northrup secon d. Both got out in front quickly in mota two , thei r ba ttle carrying them awa y from the pack . Whoever won would ge t th e XR . Never more than three bikele ngt hs a part, they passed and re passed a number of tim es on the d usty trac k. Toycen had the lead on the last la p, but suddenly Northrup passed h im in a short straigh t after the ledge . T oycen then pulled off the track in disgust , his motor apparently seized , as Northrup joyfully raced alone to the checkered. Division Two of the 125cc Juniors p itted the - leaders in that class together. Ron Hume (Suz) , co-leader with Scott Hamilton (Su z), was pumped and went I-I for the overall and his XR. Hamilton had problems slowing him to sixth. . Ten 500 cc Pros ca me to the gate for their first mota , a ll but Dale Luedtke (Suz). Maico-rnounted Val Tamietti was firs t out of turn one, never to be headed . Luke Messer followed him the distance. Randy R od r iguez was thi rd the entire race, with Bill Jewell in fourth. Bob Maxwell p assed Jewell on the second lap when J ewell stalled in a corner, but crashed hard under the bridge on the uphill on lap six . giving Jewell his place back. Tamietti and Messer repeated their first moto performance in moto two almost as though it were choreographed. Jewell was third until Rodriguez quickly closed the gap and passed him on lap 10. Jewell got him back right after that . however, when Rodriguez was forced to slow with a wobbly front wheel that appeared to be on the verge of collapsing. Luedtke closed on him at the end, but ran out of time . Had the race been a couple corners longer, fourth would have been his , Scott Montgomery (H on) jumped out of the gate first in moto on e of the 250cc Pros , but was overhauled by Steve Blackman (Mai) . Tamietti and T im Lunde (Ma i) came around next. Lun de shot up two places on lap four to put him in second a nd started closing on Blackman . Greg Blackwell (C -A) moved in on Tamietti who was doing likewise to Montgomery. On lap seven, Tamietti gassed it past Montgomery out of the sharp horseshoe. At the short drop before the u phill , Lunde put the move on Blackma n for the lead and was gone. Things remained the same until la p 11 when the Tamiett i/Montgomeryl Blackwell trio tightened up . Montgomery wen t over the drop off a
