AUG. 20 Bea u tiful warm weather and some excellent sections la id out by J ea n Fradette, p resi dent of the Inter n a tiona l Trials Association . combined for a successful trial enjoyed by all . ' The sections contained a little of almost everything Saddleback Park has to offer: big drop-offs, loose rocks . ledges . tight turns, and tricky offca m b e rs. One Expert section in particular (nin e and 10) contained nearly all of the above with a drop into a narrow gully immediately followed by a rocky five -foot ledge. The riders c o n ti n u e d through the twist y . rockstrewn gully to exit after a very slippery off- camber. Definitely tough! T he Expert class was convinci ng ly won by Greg Lersch ( Bul) with 47 poin ts. Up and com ing Greg Bye rs (Bu l) claimed seco nd with 78 points a nd plonking into third with 94 dabs was Ri ck Bieniak. In the Amat eur r a n ks . R ick McCabe ( Bu l) came out on top with 62 p o ints . R eed Evans ( Mo n) gave McCabe a run for it with .68 points to take second. Honda -mounted Ron Ben igar had an excellent ride to place third. Speaking of Amateurs and Experts . (T iD future ITA events they will combined to form a "Pro" class. Details are still being iro ne d out but basically the system works like this: All r id ers w ill ha ve a p ercentag e handicap . For exa m ple. a National ca liber rider like Marland Whaley , may have a handicap of 2.5 multiplied by his finishing score. say 40 po ints. This would leave him with a total of 100 . Now a lesser rider may finish with 70 points. But h is handicap may o nly be 1.4 so his to ta l would be 98 po ints a nd th erefore win the cash . T he Amateurs' and Experts' entry fee would be put into a pot for the ca sh prize . OK . back to the resu lts . Thirteen yea r-old M ike Lauxen (Han) topped the Novices with a fine score of 72 . Bill Hannon ( Bu l) was breathing down ' Mike 's ne ck with 73 points. Brent Battin (Hon) claimed third in his first Novice ride. The most hotly- contested class of the day was th e Beginner class. Jim Dougherty topped 'em with 18 points. Right behind with 19 was Robert Mennell. Chris McHugh . with 20 points. nailed down third. The First -tim e Beginners. who ride three loops instead of four .: were bested by Pau l Boisclair with an , incredible sco re of 20 . Phillip Raugkin and Jay Hermann fought it out for second with Raugkin com ing out o n top with 64 po ints to Hermann's close 66 . Keith Klafs ran off with the Senior class win with 13 po ints . Lyle Ouele . with a sco re of 25 . ' took second with b Bruce Davis cli mbs out of an ITA Amateur trap at Saddleback. Steve Eklund Glenn Byers a close third with 28 marks . Sb all you non -trials riders ought to come out and give trials a try. You'll have a lot of fun . might win some bucks . and see a lot of nice looking checkers and sign . up girls to boo t.
