Clint H a rd ick was the outstanding Pro rider of the night as he went two for two in th e I25cc raceto grab a win over hard-luck rid er Randy Hess and John Tess itore . Hess was way out in front in the first mo to , but went on his head on the fifth lap, thus opening the gate for the Hardick win . In the 250cc Pros , it looked like an end to Hardick's domination. In the first moto he ran a distant fourth to David Gerig, Tony Gomez and Randy Hess. However, Hess was caught cutting th e course and was set back to last - thus moving Hardick to third . In the second moto Hardick blasted to the lead with Gomez in second and Gerig running third for a three-way tie- breaker situation. Gomez, however, was not aware of the setback to Hess and thought he had the class win with the second place, but Hardick had a double for the night! In the 500s, first timer (for 1978 ) Tony Wanket scored a close tiebreaker second moto win for the overall over Gerig. In the 500cc Intermediate class, the long awaited duel between Matt Ca ner and Tracy McMillan finally came about with McMillan making " the pass of the night" on Carter with a ha lf lap to go for a first moto win. McMillan coasted to an easy win in the second moto as Carter's scooter came up lame. While the outstanding rider of the . night award had to go to Hardick, the "class of the night" was definitely the I25cc Intermediates, as red- hot Scott Meyer had to battle in both motos for the win over a 17-rider field . In th e first moto Meyer go t off slow and had to m ake a banzai run in the last la p from fourth to second behind Allen Fox , and in the second rou nd, it looked like a tie-b rea ker win for third place r Keith Pagel u ntil th e last lap a nd aga in Meyer fou nd an extra handful of tract ion to edge th e ha rd rid ing Page l. T he Junior classes produced some new faces in nea rly all divisions 'with th e outstanding win goi ng to Dennis Du nn in th e 500s. Dunn too k a tiebreak er over new rider Wayne W alther and last week's win ner Randy Norman. Another Junior lookin g good was Bob by Vrhel , who gra bbed a nother tie-breaker win in th e first division of the I2 5s over Bryan Maloney. In other action , another brother and sister combo is making itself felt at Speedway 117 with April Dunlap tak ing he r second stra igh t Women 's Open and little broth er Kenny Dunlap grabbing th e Mini Juniors over Kevin Gensler . CMC night motocross racing continues every W ednesday night throughout the summer , winding u p on August 30, and then on Sept ember 6 will be a CMC "Super Pro Night" at Speedway 117 with a guaranteed pu rse of $600 per class plus classes for the top 20 Juniors and Intermed iat es and a CMC Mini Expert class with a $100 gift certificate for first plac el It will be open to all CMC Pros and CMC Min i Exp erts plus the top 20 Juniors a nd Intermediates from Speedway 117 qualifiers to be held on the last th ree Wednesdays of August. Lester RIVERS ID E, CA ,JUNE 25 Lee Flem ing (Due) was a triple winn er at th e Manning road race at Riverside. Teammate Whitney Blakeslee (Kaw) ran second to Lee in Open Production, Open Box Stock , and in th e Inv itational Match Race. Closest of the three races was 500cc ·O pen Production, which was a spec tator's delight , with Ed Toomey (Yam) and Scott Clough (Yam) in an equally tight struggle for th e 500cc Production lead. The event u a l winners Fleming and Toomey had laps timed at 1:43 and 1:47 respectively. Mark Homchick (1;41 laps) looked set to run off with- the 250cc GP , building up a four-second lead over Steve Lang and Darrell Lee by the end of th e fourth lap. But Darrell passed Steve on th e next lap , and began reeling in Homchick, who was starting to expe rie nce electrical troubles. After three laps of nail-biting suspe nse, Darrell got past for th e win . The 500cc-O pen GP race, however , was never in doubt after the firs t lap. Gil Martin (750 Yam) turned in some very impressive 1:37 lap times , but unfortunately for him, Steve Mallonee (750 Yam) was zipping around Riversid e four seconds per lap fasterl Everyone's attention was soon directed toward th e 500cc GP class where Barry Elliott (Yam) and Steve Lang (Ya m) were circulating closer than newlyweds . Lang's blazing 1:39 final lap gav e him the decision by half a wheel length. Another photo-finish saw Earl Smith (C -A) edge Jim Lester OBS CoAl in 200cc GP by a wheel length (I shou l ~ have used a bigger wheel) . Jake Manmng would hav e made it a threesome, but he ran out of petrol in the final turn , and wound up coasting across t he finish line behind th ird finisher Chuck Chaffee. Earlier in th e da y Smith (C-A) had led eventual winner John Chermak (Berkeley Yam ) for over a lap in th e Lightweight race, before backing off with an overheating engine. Steve Sheftel (H on) cruised to an easy victo ry in the I ?~c.c 9 class , r. as d id Rich McCl anahan (Ya m ) In I2 5cc Produc tio n . T had W olff (Yam) took a wire -towire victo ry over Ed Toomey (Yam) in th e 350cc Produ ction race. Best action was the thi rd -place dice be tween Da ve McClanahan and do ub le-winner (200cc a nd 250cc Pro duction ) Chermak. T he day's ot her double win ners wer e Honda riders Steve Schrader and Ca rry Keoshgerian in th e Four-Stroke and Cafe races (in the 500cc and 750cc classes, respectively).
