Hames hauls for two at Corona HM/ST By Elaine Jones CORONA. CA ,JUNE 28 The much cooler night time temperatures seemed to affect equipment a lot more than it did riders Wednesday at Corona Raceway's half mile and short track races. Pete Hames, " Mr. Consistent," is fast becoming the rider to beat on the ovals as he got things off to a good start in the Money short track. The "Sim i Flash" went out in front at the drop of the flag with Earl Roloff a close second and Ross Klatt third. Hames started pulling awa y while Roloff was stuck in the position of trying to play catch -up and hold Kla tt at bay . He was successfu l until th e sixth lap when Klatt got a wh eel und er Roloff on turn four and won the drag race down the front straight. However. Roloff came right back and reclaimed his spot. Klatt set Roloff up again and aga in he was able to get by him . With one lap to go Klatt did some heads up riding and followed Hames home to take second . Roloff was third. The 250cc Mo ney half mile ended up a match race between Hames and Todd Brown when Mike Vital encou nt ered bike problems an d was unable to make the main . H ames go t th e jump off th e line, rode a smooth. m istake -free race and took th e win . T he Open Money half mi le brought some good riders together in a common bond. The pursu it of the dough. At th e start it was Don "T Bon e" Gri gsb y on top with Bob Russell second and Eddi e San Roman third. San Roman was quick to move on Ru ssell a nd had taken over second as they headed into th e third la p . Grigsb y was rid ing a very radica l line and it wasn't too long before it sta rted getting h im into trouble. San Roman was close enoug h to make a mo ve but "T Bon e" always seemed to sa ve himself at th e last moment and sta y ahead . Back in th e pa ck . Bill Cain was picking his way through traffic and when th e halfway sign came out he was in third and looking for more . Grigsby had settled down and despite some very good attempts on the part of San Roman. he was able to stay on top a nd start putting some daylight on the field . Sari Roman was holding down second to th e fru stration of Cai n and they fini shed in that order. The Open Amateur/Ex pert half mile saw Pee Wee Gleason run off and hid e fro m th e rest of th e field but when the white flag came ou t he was nowher e in sigh t a nd Bill Ca in took over . As first had turned out to be t he kiss of d eath for Gleason it proved to have th e sa me effect on Ca in and it was Bill Ru ssell in the lead when th e checkered fell . Ca in was second and Scott Shoup claim ed third. Ross Klatt b roke on top in th e 250cc am a teu r / Expert half mi le with "Cowboy" Stan Kinsey rid ing tandem with him . By th e second lap Kinse y had taken over the lead and settled down to do some serious racing. Klatt nipped a t his heels while Sh awn Pettis a nd Mark Butler diced behind him . Kinse y's bike went sour on th e sixth lap and when the white flag came out it was Klatt on top with Pett is and Butler in the two. three slots. They finished in that order. Danny Perkins. getting some practice in on Pete H a mes' rocket, had no trouble at all taking the 250cc Amateur/Expert short track. Bruce Windham was out second, but lost it to Shawn Pettis on the second lap and settled for third. Rob Ely , the Bakersfield whiz , has been making frequent trips to Corona and is earning the reputation as the rider to beat in the 125cc Amateur/ Expert class . This race was no exception as he held Garth Beavers at bay on both the short track and half mile. Mike Redding was third in both but Mike Wesson , also of Bakersfield. made h im work for it and would have definitely been a contender if he hadn't suffered mechanical problems. J.C.
