T wo wee ks ago it was the Sportsman/Pro Program . Last week it was the O ld Timers Motocross Associa tion National Championship . spo nsored by th e Los A ngel es Chapter of the OT M X. The Geritol set got toget her for a two-da y, six m ot a . mara tho n . for O ld Timers a nd Over The Hill Gang members from all over the western Uni te d States. There was also a special two -more ra ce on Saturday for sons a nd daughters of club m embers. T wo hu ndred a nd sixtv-t hree entra nt s were treated to pe rfect wea t her condi tions a nd a supl"r track . The Sierra Cha pte r of th e OTMX led by Dick Mann . a rr ived in fo rce and eas ily won the learn trophy. The Master class was dom ina ted by "T he Ma nn ." Dick won five o ut of six motos a nd onl y a getoff in mor o number five kept him fro m making a clean swee p. Even a t th at he p icked it u p . m idw ay t hrough the race, and was in t hir d when th e chec ke re d nag fell . Tha t is not to im ply tha t he ran aw a y from the rest of th e riders in every m ota. At various ti mes he wa s pressed hard by J ohn Ma roney, J oe McK enz ie a nd Ma rvin O lson. However . the only on e that consiste ntly see me d to have a ch ance of ca tc hing th e old Pro was La rry Johnson. La rry had a lock on seco nd ove ra ll going into the last moto , but th in gs turned sour. While running a close second. he fou led a plug. DNF and dropped way back to seventh overall. The smoothest ride was turned in by 62 -yea r ·old Dave McCoy, who had two fourths . one fifth and three sixth place fin ishes for a well deserved sixth overall. T he O ld Timer Expert class was proof that in a six-m ota co ntest, consiste ncy is just as important as speed. Sierra 's Gene Higgenbotham looked very good in th e last Iou r motos, ta king t hree seconds and finis hing the day with a win. However . a 9-6 pl acing in th e first a nd second 'm oto set him back to thi rd overall . Washington's Ben Sessions appeared to have th e best chance of victory. but a fourth in eac h day's opening rno to and a th ird in the fina le outweighed his th ree wins and left hi m in second p la ce. by one po int . Los Angeles' Gary Co le won the first moto each day. never finished worse than third a nd edged out Ben for secon d in th e last moto 10 take home the gold. The OT Amateurs were divided into two divi sions. In Division One it was Do n j e nse n and Bill Haym a n battling to a 12-point tie. J ensen took firs t overa ll by virtue of a win in the ' a ll-important sixth mota.
