Th e Ok lahoma Camel Pro Series rac e was rained ou t, but t he camel race wasn 't . Graham grabs OK Jr./Ex. ST By Frank H. Harrison OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, MAY 20 It's the same every year on the weekend of May 20th at H ugo Shea's big Mid America rally and Camel P ro Series, the floods come to Oklahoma City. You might call it annual atmosphere, the drone of the helicopter drying the track, the thousands of Toad riders splashing down the street in their rai nsuits, street bikes jammed under any overhang, under the grandstand, and racers with alot of Oklahoma clay on their shoes . But Hugo pulled it off again , at least the night short track and camel race. Not the Camel Pro race , it was rained out Sunday', but a real live camel race. After all the qualifying heats were out of the way and before official race time, six real camels showed up , and with familiar names blanketing their sides like Motorcycle Supply, Borg Warner Acceptance. and Wholesale Supply and Fox Dist . , and riders like Doc Holliday , Nevada Jones and Harold Palmer. Harold put on his spectacular scene by promptly falling off the camel as it got to its feet , and camels ain't like bikes , once you turn 'em on you can't tum 'em off. In an instant camels were wildly running in every direction and cowboys tried to rope 'em off. With 4000 spectators in the grandstands an d $3000 up for grabs , races were run with fast" pace to beat the clouds that were constantly threatening, and Novice semis were also worked into the evening program . Semi one saw rookie Expert Rick Graham take a win over Harley rider Garth Brow and Steve Elo's Yamaha . Ronald Jones (Yam) won the second semi over Bill Orr with Ken Brittain taking third. It was rush , rush , rush to get the Expert Junior main off the grid as thunder and lightning was in the offing. Quickest into tum one were California's Ricky Graham. O kla hom a 's Tim Cartwright and Mike Green, ~th Ricky Graham picking up a demanding lead down the backstretch. Cartwright and Green fought it ou t for second, and Green won the battle temporarily as Graham opened his lead . Cartwright m oved back in second and Green had another battle for third as Ronny Jones came on strong. The track was getting slick as another rider fell in turn one and a restart was called. Green was quickest for a short-lived backstretch, only to settle back -int o third and the finish was Graham , Cartwright, Green and .. 35 •
