Clark was fourth .
Fresh from a third in last week's
250cc Handicap, Sauer handled
Saturday's group of 200cc Handicap

175cc Yamaha to the lead at the start,
he never looked back. Terry Atkinson
(Suz) was second and Joey Jaconetti
(Yam) was third.
Ken Gray shot to the front at the
green flag of the 250cc Experts and let

Sudberry third and Mike Hall was

Jones, Pomeroy
pull Hillside
victories
By The Squisher
MOSES LAKE, W A. MAY 7
A record turnout of nearly 350
riders competed at Hillside motocross Sunday, making for one
long day of racing. The first
Minibike class started at 10:30 and the
last bike didn't leave the track until
almost eight. The track was in
excellent shape with the dust being
held under control fairly well.
Pat Jacobson (Suz) . who rode three
classes. holeshot the firs t I25cc Pro
moto and proceeded to pull out a large
lead. Phil Larson (Suz) and DeWayne
Marker (Suz) battled for second until
Larson took charge late in the moto.
After a poor st art , Bill J ones (Suz)
drove past every rider except Jacobson
as he took second at the checkered.
Jones squ irted out front in the
second moto and was never headed.
Pat Jacobson suffered from an u nusual
mid-pack start and crashed on the
downhill while trying to pass a slower
rider. Gary Racca (Yam ) finished
second with Phil Larson third , giving
him second overall .
The 250cc Pro cla ss was a Ron
Pomeroy (LO P Hon) benefit as Ron
led both motos from start to finish .
Gary Racca (Yam) rode con sistently
for second overall. Gary Kuest (Yam)
rode well to a third in the first rnoto ,
but couldn't back it up in th e second
as he collided with a rider while trying
to pass. Pa t Jacobson (Suz) worked his
way up to third in the first rnoto , but
was slowed when his plug cap came
loose.
The IOOcc Pro class was a Phil
Larson (Suz) runaway with wire- towire wins in bot h motos . Kevin
Logston (Yam) followed Phil for a
well-earned second .
Dennis Ostriern (Suz) put perfect
starts in his qualifier and final moto as
he easil y won the 250cc B class in his
first 250cc race. Jodie Luke (Yam )
gained on Ostriem near the end of
each rnoto, but could not get the good
starts.
Mother Nature
shines on HiMountain Enduro
(Finally)
By Jerry Counts
LOS PADRES NAT'L. FO REST, CA ,
MAY 14
Mother Nature celebra ted
Mother's Day by allowing the Cal
Poly Penguins to run the twicerained- out 28 th Hi-Mountain
En duro . Unfortunately, the delays
resulted in a loss of 40 mi les of course
and 120 of the origina l 300 entries.
On Sa tu rday night. the Penguins
showed movies of past events. To make
su re that no one th ought they were
ordinary home movies , they pointed
out their own genuine star. Steve
McQueen.
The first loop started with a brisk 20
MPH average which led to the first
check at 10 miles. This was an easy zero
for the A riders. but was pretty fast for
the C riders for which the loop was
designed . Between the first and second
check, it was "get it on " time as only
the better As were able to maintain the
average.
The course was a combination of
valley trails and ridge running on fire
breaks that seemed to be near vertical.
The' second check was the tie -breaker
and had most riders three to 10
minutes late. The course then went
down a paved road. " The speed
averages to the finish would have been
ridable for most riders if they had been
allowed to get back on time. but most
were late to the last secret check and
the finish of the loop. All eight C
riders who finis hed tr ophied. Ma rtin
Sharpe took the C Open win with 87
points lost, Curt Clark won the 250cc
class with a much better 31 poi nts a nd
Kevin Win was the I25cc class win ne r
with 124 points d ro pped.
T he second loop ha d no start check
a nd re ran the first part of the fist loop,
except at 24 MPH. The riders who left
early and gamb led had a big
advantage over the riders who left on
time , and many were able to zero the
check at about the I 8·m ile point. Soon
after the course led through some
private land where the average had
dropped to 10 MPH for P.R. reasons .
After a couple of miles of paved
road , the course turned off into a
p asture with two-foot -high grass ,
which made looking for rocks and ruts
exciting to say the least. After another
15 miles of checkless course, which
consisted of tough ridges and trails that
had the best riders late again , the
course dropped down to the Pozo
Saloon where a 15 minute gas stop was
located.
At this point, many of the exhausted
riders decided that the saloon had
more to offer than the remaining 25
miles of course, especially since it was
only a few miles down a road back to
the pits. For the hardy ones , it was
back on the course at 30 MPH down
the paved road , past the turkey farm
and ba ck into the hills .
This section provided some of the
tough est ridge riding, considering the
hea t and the demanding 85 mi les the
riders had already com pleted. The last
secret check was in this section and
took away lots of points . Sp eed
ave rages dropped to 20 MPH , which
allowed the 21 A and 37 B survivors to
m ake up some time. Only the faster
riders got to the finish on time.
Cal Poly Penguins ' did an
ou tst a nd ing job by using several
sections of trail in both directins and
even one section three times . The
course went through a five-wa y
intersection in
three different
directions , fortunately there were
course marshalls present which
prevented mass confusion . Referee
Larry Rego deserves credit since he
owns the only speedometer in the club
and rode his very first enduro earlier
this year. The co urse, which had
some of the most outstanding views
most riders will see, had ribbon and
a rrows in a bundance. Like most tough
runs. the 66 finishers thought it was a
great one. The milages and clocks
were spot on and the 51 happy trophy
winners left wit h their gold by 4 p .m . ,
a n ac hievement which . more clubs
shou ld try for .
