Sportsmen wrap up Coors Trans-AME MX Series By Lee Taylor BISHOP, CA, MAY '1.7 A strong turnout of Sportsman riders gathered at Bishop for the final race in the Coors TransAME Series. They vied with the Annual " Mule Days" celebration for the town 's attention and in spite of the heat , th ey drew hearty support from th e townsfolk. The Bosch Plugs people were there , as t h ey ha ve been throughout the series , supporting the riders and providing a CB radio, th is time won by Min i rider Jeff Black. Rounding up the series for the Mini Intermediates, Louie Franco and Randy Dyer fought for top points down to the wi re with Franco emerging the champ, both for the da y's ride with back-to-hack wins and holding top series po ints as well. Dyer rode a strong '1. .'1. rac e , holding a firm second in the series. In the Mini Exp erts, Pat McConnell already had the series victory sewn up but came to rid e the last race, taking another pa ir of wins. Fo r t he 100cc Experts , Andy Meszaros unseated David Barberio in series points by winning his class for the da y. Da vid Baker, who took a second, held firm with th ird for the series . For th e 100cc Intermediates, Randy Harden held his lead in Series points despite problems with his bike in the da y's race. Jim Coffe y's beau tiful pa ir of wins shot him up into second for the series. T he 1'1.5i:c Intermediate po in ts battle throughout the series had been a cliff hanger between Mike Scott , Bill Peterson and Eric Graves for the title . Scott said he was "going to go for it and do th e best I can." His best turned out to be enoug h to cinch the title. He fought off Peterson and David Baker throughout two hot and hea vy rnotos. Baker ended th e day with top honors for the class and mo ved himsel f up to third for the series. T he 1'1.5cc Junior race for points ended after two months of some of th e heaviest comp tetit ion around with Scott King barely holding onto Numero Uno over Scott Yarbrough. The '1.50cc Junior race cinched the series title for Randy Rogers who was already way out in front in the standings. Winning his class with a 1-'1. ride was the frosting on the cake. Mike Price, who won the overall in his division , settled nicely into second in the series. For the '1.50cc Intermediates, Rob O'Rourke held his series lead, tallying an impressive 1,380 points. Rob then came back Sunday to ride his first race as a Pro. . Barry Meyer (Yam) just walked away with a series lead of over 800 points in the 500cc Juniors.
