Old Timers MX: Grandfathel;'s play on Mother's Day By Wayne Powell Photo by Bill Lyons VA L ENC IA, CA , MAY 14 T he Oldtimer's Motocross Association came to Indian Dunes to ride with AME. The light turnout can be attributed to the fact that 20 it was Mother's Day. I solved th e problem by in viting m y parents to go with us. For those that braved th e wrath of wives a nd mothers , and showed up anyway, it was to d iscover that the Shadow Glenn course had been totally revamped . It now has a stream crossi ng, a couple of mud hol es , a wet sand straighta way and some very tight turns. Before the day was over, a lot of old tim ers had inspected th e surface of the track - very closely. In th e last lap of th e se con d m oto , I p erso n all y ch ecked to see if the re were any trout in the stream . W ith th e heat of th e day and all. it wa s a ctually qu it e refr eshi ng . Bl a ck ie Lewis a n d Marsh all J ennin gs were th e only ent ries in th e Ma ster class, so t hey went off the lin e wit h t he Experts . Having a cha nce to dice with the b la ck plat es always bri ngs out th e b est in th e Experts . Sam Jones and Dave Hutchi ngs were righ t wit h Lewis and Jennings into the first turn . Lewis unloaded , whil e Jennin gs go t sq u irrely in the sa nd and it was Hutchin gs in the lead at th e end of th e first lap. On th e second tim e around , it was J ennings' turn to dump it , and Sam Jones took a lead that he was not to lose . Blackie worked his way back u p th rough the pack and was right on Sam's tail at the end , but Sam was t he win ner of a sprint to th e flag. In the second moto it was J ennings 'lead ing Lewis for the first th ree laps, while Jones was overcoming a bad start that left him at the ba ck of the field . On the fourth lap , Jennings d iscovered th at it just wasn't his da y: He lost it again and wound up on h is lea thers, giving Lewis the win . While thi s was going on , Dave Hu chins a nd Ed Scheidler were in a battle for th e lead in the Expert Class . Scheidler made the pass on the fourth lap and th en held of a charging Sam Jones to win the mota. Jones was th e overall Expert winner, with Sch eidler taking second with a 3· 1. Hutch ins fin ishe d 2-3 for third. The Amateur class was another four -way figh t bet ween the cu rr ent "hot d ogs" of th e d ivision. Don Jens en gassed it in the first m oto , but d um ped it on th e second lap of th e second mot a and h ad to scra m ble ba ck up int o co ntent ion . His 1-3 fin ish was goo d for firs t overall. Chuck W oody m anaged a 3-2 for seco nd, a nd Pet e Kla ssen went 2·6 for third . In the N ovice d ivision , it wa s busin ess as usual , with J oe Bray sweep ing both mot os with an ot her b eau tiful ri d e. Don Hobson took second brass with a 3·2 , wh ile you rs truly bumbled around for a 2-3 and a third overall. Results MASTER : 1. Blackie Lew is (Mai); 2. Marshall J enningslMail. EXPERT: 1. MXer Gary Jones makes good at Corona TT By Elaine Jones CORONA , CA , MAY 10 It was a night for the specialists at Co rona Raceway as each of the Money class Winne rs excells in the type of track they wer e riding. Ammex rider Gary Jones started th in gs off on th e TT as he went against Danny, Perkins. Perkins was riding a Yamaha which looked to be set up for motocross - he cou ld hardly get his feet on ' the ground . Jones definitely had th e advantage as he- got off th e lin e with a super good sta rt and won t he d rag race to th e first turn. Perkins seem ed to be having difficulty with the balance of the bike but nonetheless hung in th er e and gave win ner Jones a good run for his money until his b ike went sour. Jones later won the 250 cc Amateur/Expert TT. T odd Brown , partial to oval racing, go t a lucky break in th e 250cc Money half mil e when friendly rival Pete Hames encou ntered bike problems about the same tim e th e green fla g dropped . One lap later he retir ed to th e pits. Brown on the other hand had a picture perfect ra ce. T erry Singleton (A m mex) was off seco nd but was reall y getting pressured b y Joe St effen . St effen wo u ld lit e rall y run up Sing leton's ta ilpi pe only to ha ve Terry sh ut th e door on him . It work ed for seven la ps but th en Steffen tried ano ther lin e a nd it pa id off as he zipped to second. With two more laps to go Singleton cou ldn' t find a hole and had to settle for third behind Brown and Steffen. The last of th e trio of Money races pulled to the line as the 750cc bikes made ready to do battle . St eve Fortune, aboard his Harley , was the m an off first with Dorothy Rowe and Eddie San Roman in th e two, thre spots. Dorothy, who had looked very strong pulled off on the second lap and it was now San Roman's turn to wor k on Fortune. San Roman is not an out front racer but sits back and makes his move close to the end. This time it didn't work as Fortune put the distance on the field and kept it there in sp ite of a strong charge fro m San . Roman. Scott Shoup was third. A Before Rowe was sidelined from the activities , she managed to outfox all the men in the Open Amateur/Expert half mile. It was a wire -to-wire victory for t he young lady who has been looking awfully good of late. Steve Cullinan got off second but lost it on the third lap to Bill Cain when h is bike went sou r. Cain held the second spot for the di stan ce with Lawrence O 'Connor, a visi tor from BritisH Columbia, rounding ou t the field in th ird . ' TI Pete; Hames also hit pay dirt before his bike becames sick and afflicted. The 250cc Amateur/Expert half mil e was where he did it. Hames broke on top with Joe Steffen right there with him a nd Terry Singleton a close third. Todd Brown did a fancy number' OIl th e first lap wh ich saw him move from fourth to second before th ey had gone around for the first time. From th at point on th e ra ce was set and th eY finished in that order. J Results o TT MINI: 1. Curtis Cannon IY.ml; 2. Kevin Clark (Yam); 3. Rog.. Thompson (Yaml . . 16 125cc NOV : 1.
