On th e second lap Mamola took the lead and easily won that race, followed by Beader, Da ve Garroute and Gidney. In th e !>OOcc·Open . GP ra ce , Wes Cooley (1000 Yosh imura Suz) came ahead of McLaughlin, Mamola and Hammer on the first lap . McLaughlin took the lead on the second, a nd Hammer took it on the third lap . CA , MAY 14 Moto-Meister Maico-sponsored Bill J ewell got things going for th e first Open Pro race at Continental Moto-sports Club's Carlsbad Raceway mo tocross. Da vid Gerig pu t his Ocean Pacific/Tibblin Racing Products Suzuki in seco nd wit h Bob Bourne (Bul) a nd Husqv arna 's Ch ip Howell next. Pete Wanket , who has been ou t of ra cing for months with a broken leg , had his Yamaha in hot pursuit of th e leaders. Geri g gra b bed th e lead on lap two putting J ewell into seco nd to deal with Howell. Bob Maxw ell (Ma i) a nd Wanket spe nt some time dicing it out. On th e 10th lap . Wanket went for t he gusto getting by J ewell, and Maxwell finishing th e race onl y a few bik e lengths behind Gerig. Maxwell , a t the end of the moto went back to his pit and had to repla ce 15 re ar sp okes. Geri g cha lked up another in his a lrea dy lon g list of holeshots wh en he got th e jump on th e rest of th e rid ers in th e seco nd rn ot o . Howell , Jewell. Ma xwell , J ohnny Barr and Wanket spe d after. him . The lea d was solely David's until th e sixt h lap when his Su zuki p itched its cha in . Ma xwell was quick on th e wick 10 ca p tu re th e lead . W anket ha d worked his way to seco nd with J ewell a nd Howell rig ht beh ind. Wanket took over as lea d er on th e I I th lap a nd rode th e lead positi on for th e win. W ank e. go t th e overa ll mon ey with Maxwell . Ger ig a nd J ewell taking home what was left of th e purse . The 250cc Pro class ha s been th e largest lat el y for CMC with some pretty hot racin g happen ing each tim e they ge t togeth er. David Geri g smo ked off the lin e to do it again . Ab a in Le levier (Suz) . Stev e Bartley (Han). Bassett 's Dave Miller (Ya m) a nd T on y Wanket (Ya m) were following th e leader. Miller ca p tu red the lead on th e third lap with Gerig. Lelevier , Bartl ey and Wanket still aft er the number one rider. By th e sixth la p Steve Blackman (Ma i) had go tten from back in th e pack to third beh ind B ar~l ey a nd Miller . T im Lunde was spend ing some tim e working th rough tr affic as Blackman did .
