MAY 14 The Scholastic Association of Motosports fired up their third r a ce for the season toda y at Saddleback Park . There was a slight cha nge though a nd this time high schoo l Mot ocross was run with th e regula rl y sched u led Sunday race a nd on t he sa me track . Everth in g tu rned ou t very well as bot h p rog r am s we nt smoo t h ly together. The cou rse was Grand Pr ix style and quite long as th ey co nnec ted the high school track with the normal Sunda y track . One th ing was certain a nd th at was that it was a su pe r hot day and th e tr ack conseq uent ly dried out qu ickly and became pretty dusty. Jeff Ortberg (Ma i) literall y - dusted the 250cc Junior class in grand style. The Newport High rider took home a major win for his school and you could tell where he was from because of the sharp Newport jersey. Jeff was followed in the first rnoto by Rob Neil (Suz) of Villa Park and Cerritos' Steve Quinn (Hon) . ". A fter quite a wait the second moto fired off and Ortberg decisively led the pack. MAY 6 Yamaha factory rider Mik e Bell once again demonstrated wh y he 's a crowd p leaser as he won the Open Pro class at Saturday Saddleb ack Mot oc ro ss. Last week's win ner Scott Cavness, on a n Orange Count y Suzuki RM 400 . finished second a nd rea lly m ade Bell work for the win. Ca vness jumped to an ea rly lead in the first 500 cc Pr o ra ce but Bell was not fa r beh in d. The two pulled fa r ou t in fro nt of th e rest of th e field as Bell finall y passed Cavness on th e eight h lap . Ca vness tried 10 repass a co u ple of laps later but th e two rid ers tangl ed a nd Cavness fell . He remo unt ed still in seco nd and held th e position until th e J eff checkers. Ma ico -rnounted Wither ell and Ga ry Jones on a n Amrnex fought a race lon g d uel for third with J on es fin all y getting the nod . As the second moto came d own th e sta rti ng hill th e order was Cavness in front closely follow ed by Bell . Wither ell a nd Jones. For three laps Cavness held off Bell before slipping off lin e a nd letting Bell get by. Jones fell on the sixth lap and then ch a rge d back up to fourth trying to ca tch W itherell , bu t ran out of time. By t he fin ish Bell had opened up a pretty good lead on Cavness who had a n even big ger lead over Witherell. Bell took home th e big money with Ca vn ess seco nd overa ll and Witherell taking th ird with a 4-3 sco re. Maico rider T im Lunde ran awa y with both motos of th e 250cc Pr os. O'Mara nails nocturnal AME MX By Lee Taylor VALENCIA , CA , MAY 12 John O 'Mara (Suz- AI Baker) racked up a super pair of back-toback wins in the 125cc Pro class at Am erican Motocross Enterprises' night motocross at Indian Dunes. He sta rted off the first moro by leaping into th e lead and stretching it inot a victory ride throughout the moto . Hot o n his t a il wa s Ch ip Johnson (Su z; C rossR o a d s Suz ), followed by John Oswald. After a rough start , locking handlebars on the line, Bob Ramsey piloted his new Kawasaki up int o fourth. A tight duel was going down for fourth between Ra msey and Jimmy Crowder (Su z-Su z SpOTtS Center) with R a m sey , riding for Burbank Kawasaki , holding fourth. At the end of the moto , O 'Mara skipped across in the lead. Johnson held solid in second, Oswald finished third and Ramsey took fo urth. The start of the second moto was an instant re play for O'Mara . As J ohnson and Ramsey settled into second and th ird respectively. the rest of the pack was p icking itself up after several riders piled up . O 'Mara, opening up a super lead , left a battle behind him between Johnson , Ramsey and Crowder. Johnson pulled on away as Ramsey cont inue d 10 fight off Crowder to the end. Crowder went down . gtvmg Joe Johnson a chance to move into fourth and pursue R a msey. Johnson's reign in fourth .was short -lived . Going down . he turned his position over to Pete Snorteland who held on to the finish. At the finish line O'M ara collected top dollar for the night . Chip Johnson took down seco nd over -all and th ird went to Ramsey for a 4-3 rid e. In the Veterans cla ss, Keith Phillips (Su z) took complete control with ba ckto -back wins . Throughout th e first moro R ich M cMill an (Su z-Su zu ki Ventura) was a strong second, holding Richard Alexander to third. The second tim e ou t Phillips once more set up his command post with Alexander hounding him in second , Dennis Sm it h running third and McMillan now up in fourth . When the winning checkered flag brought them home. Phillips claimed top honors. McMillan crossed in third but his score was good for second overall and third overall went to Sm ith .
