Croft DNF and Yamaha's Mike Bell took 'the class win as well as the Open Pros. " Tim Lunde won t he CMC Saddleback 125cc Pro class on an FMF Suzuki. a new face, Lenng Giger, in posit ion two. Rick Mak i (Suz) , Eri c Coffin (Suz), J ohn Oswald (Su z) and Pau l Emerson (Suz) had the next places. By t he th ird lap , Roo- riding T on y Gom ez had worked his way to fourt h . Giger seized his mount and Maki too k over second and began pressuri ng Lu nd e. Maki , look in g like he m igh t be able to overtake Lunde's FMF Su zuk i, go t too close to th e wall on Web co Hill and at e it. In fact , after th e ra ce Maki asked if anyone h ad see n th e wall jump out into his lin e. After Mak i fell , Gomez was quick to fill in and put th e mo ves on Lunde . Maki and Coffi n spent some tim e di cing for the three/four slots with both getting a big surprise when Suzuki of Pomona -sponsored Paul Thed e came from the back of th e pack and took fourth. The first three places went to Lunde, Gomez and Maki . Mak i moved to an early lead in th e second moto but Lunde made short work of him be for e th e first lap was over. O n the fourth lap Maki and j:;iger exchanged places and Len ny began his assault on Lunde. He too was not being able to ca tch Lunde. A three-way race got goi ng at mid -po int in t he moto with Maki, Gomez and T erry Sh ekell. Gomez go t by Ma ki on lap 11 with Shekell pu tt ing them both b ac k when he flew into third on th e next -to-last lap . Gomez, Ma ki, Thede a nd T roy Fitch (Ya m) too k th e next posit ion s. Thirty-n in e 250cc Pr o rider s sho wed up to do battle with so me of th e best in the west : Riders like Yamaha's Mike Bell , Honda 's T ommy Croft , Maic o's Dave Will iams, Mot o-M eister Mai co's Tim Lunde and a new hotshoe about whom people wer e say ing a t th e e nd of th e racin g , "who in th e hell is Steve Bla ckm an ." Lenny Gig er was the first rider around Webco Hill with' Bell , j eff > Vidi c (Ma i), Scot Clifto n OBS), W illiams, David Ge rig (OP Suz ), Blackman and Croft in hot pursui t. Bell bagged th e lead by the end of th e first lap . Giger stayed in second . Clifton got by Vidi c on the third. Vidi c , Croft a nd W illiams took tu rns getting ahead of ea ch other. By the ninth lap, Croft was in command of third and beginning to make Giger a little uncomfortab le when th e front wheel on th e Honda locked up, sending T C to the ground . Although not hurt, Croft decided not to 35 ..
