It was ha rd to tell which hurt worse , t he blu e b rui ses of the bo u nced -abou t ra cers or th e red a rms of th e sidel ine tou rists. Dea n Ca tes was hot . When th e 125cc Pr o boys ca me stea m ing off th e line for thei r firs t race , Ca tes sq ueezed int o th e hole just a hea d of Mike Brown . but it wasn' t su nshi ne on his shoulder m aking him happy. it was the fac t that his jack rabbit Suzuki was hoppin g to an ever inc reasing lea d and that his "get your wa llet thick ' quick" sche me was a bo u t 10 be realized in th e form of C RC payback cash . Brown . travel ing in a seclude d seco nd . had troub le with Greg Young every turn of th e co urse. Young hung tigh t on Brown's tai l a ll th e way, just wa iting for Bro wn to slip but Brown stayed in co m ma nd co nt ro l an d a t th e fini sh of the race th e positions wer e, Cat es, Brown, and Young , 1.2 ,3 . Bro wn co p ped th e ho leshot in t he seco nd mota with Ca tes ru nning:> seco nd but Cat es ma d e fast tr a cks and one la p la ter landed in the number one spot wher e he stayed to win. Young aga in finis hed thi rd mak in g t he position s consistent for t he overa ll. Cat es. a fter padding his wall et with th e 125cc Pro money. went on to win th e 250cc purs e also . (Some people ju st' can't ge t enoug h of a good t hing.) The ) firs t 250cc m o to proved to be Ca tes' ha rdest bu t most reward ing race of the day. Starting a slow fif th. he foun d his way to th e back side of th e track onl y to have m isfortu ne h it him b ro adside as a n un identified rider flat ra n him down . Before he was a ble to re-sta rt his position had d ropped to 10th . Others might have cried " uncle" but not Cat es. He sta yed with it . bu lld ozing throu gh th e traffic unt il he squeezed up to th e front . Top contender Bob W a lker , who had th e ho lesh or , laid his bike down a nd bowed ou t of the contest a nd by th e last la p Dennis Rose held th e num ber one spot , followed by Da nn y J ea n in seco nd a nd Ca tes. When J ean tried to pass Rose for a last la p snea k. t hey got th eir fe nd ers crossed a nd bot h went down , giving Cat es just th e hole he needed to scr ea m th ro ugh for the win.
