Lunde held second place with Miller third . Lunde took an early lead in the second moto with Tripes onl y inches behind. Clark J ones , on a Standard Crank, Inc . Honda was third off the . line this time with Miller in fourth and Tim Tolar in fifth . Gerig dumped his mount coming off the gate. After th e sixth lap when Tripes took the lead there was very little changing going on. Robert Reisinger (Kaw) got to fourth with Steve Blackman fifth . Tripes sure had a giant smi le on his face when Kelvin Franks signed his check for $175 for 24 laps worth of work. Track N Travel-sponsored Va l Tarniett i took the holeshot in the first of the Open Pro races only to give it up on the second lap to David Gerig. Alan Sm ith (Up-Tire Hus) was third ahead of Yamaha -riding Chris C ha ffee , Bob Maxwell and Wes Sutton , both on Maicos. Randy Rodriguez (Wheel · smith Mai) came from the far back of the pack to capture fifth by the eighth lap . On the 10th time around, Rodriguez moved to fifth where he fini shed th e mota . The top points in the race went to Gerig, Tarn ietri , Smith , Chaffee. Rodriguez and Mark Rodman. Tamietti took th e honor of getting started first in the second round. Val kept his lead for the entire 12 laps. Chaffee got and held the numbcr two slot with Gerig riding th ird and Rodriguez and Brian Craze (Up-Tire Hus) finishing next. Tamietti got th e lion 's share of the loot. Results in Resu lts Section . Giger smokes Saddleback's Kawasaki series opener By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA . APR. 23 For the first time in the history by the park crew: The Kawasaki Motocross Series, which is sanctioned by th e Continent al Moro-sports Club . The six-event seri es will run from April to late June a nd all Sportsm en and Pr os are invited to chase after the grand prize Kawasaki 250 which will be awarded to the top points l eader at the end of the seri es! • Out ' of five ra ces some rather sensational riders were seen going all out for it. Kawasaki of La s Vegas ace Lenny Giger made the long haul from Nevada to score two wins. Giger reigned with the first overall gold in the 125cc Pro class and a third in th e 250cc Pro contest. The green -outfitt ed Giger drew quite a lot of attention from the other riders and watching spectators. He just barely got a new Kawasaki 125 andalredy was a natural on the track with it , smoking the other competitors to take two firsts in the 125cc Pro go. The other people who were in heavy pursuit of the flying green streak included -Bob by _McGregor (Suz), Mike Monaghan (Hus) , Kevin Harlow (DG) and Dave Meecham (Suz). Results in Results Section . Berry grand slams Corona at Juvenile Hall Benefit By Elaine Jones • fl' ;- • I & C. f. C: Ii I i I. _ • came right back to reclaim it as they hit the front straight on lap three. Back in the pack , Chuck Palmgren and Frank Gillespie were changing places in the four/five spots with Palmgren ahead for two and then Gillespie taking over for two . Palmgren nailed down third on the white flag lap as he came up with a spectacu lar mov e which also saw Stev Fortune get through as Loomis and Gillespie dropped to fifth and sixth respectively. As the checkered flag came out Berry saluted the crowd with one of his many wheelies . Ro loff was I second with Palmgren and Fortune third and fourth . The TT again saw Berry out on top and going for it. This time it was Dan McWhorter in pursuit with Roloff a close third and Gillespie fourth . No one seemed able to outfox anyone and they followed each other home in that order. The third jewel in Berry's tripl crown was the Open Expert half mil and again he came up with a n outstanding start. This time Bobby Sanders gave chase with Roloff again making his presence known. McWhorter, not far out of the hunt . was fourth with Fortune fifth . Fortune • took care of McWhorter on the third lap and was on his way . Three laps later Roloff succumbed to Fortune's attack and Sanders and Berry were all that remained with time running out. The white flag came out. and Fortune charged. taking care of Sanders with Roloff riding his exha ust pipe to take third . • Pete Hames , not at his best on a daytime track, got off second behind Bobby Garabedian in the 250cc Expert half mile . but dialed it pn and had a lead he never relinquished by the second lap . Todd Brown and Rob Selvy d iced for th e third spot for two laps before Brown took charge. Garabedian fell to Brown on the fifth lap but held off a strong challenge from Selvy and Chris Cannon to claim third. Cannon squeaked by Selvy to ace him ou t of fourth. Cannon pulled a ' wire-to-wire number in the 250cc Amateur/Expert TT. Ben Meyer and Tom Hughes had the second and third spots but Hughes zigged when he should have zagged on the white flag lap and Eddie Drake was there for third . It was follow the leader in the 250cc Expert short track as Todd Brown broke on top and Dylan Neihart and ) Chris Cannon followed him home. From mighty to mini was the order of the day as the only other triple : winner was Mini rider Curtis Cannon. Mr. and Mr. Lipari and their son Tom. General Manager of the Racewa y. plus all the crews donated their facility and services respectively and those that were there and participated should know that the Auxiliary is most appreciative. CORONA , CA , APR. 23 The weatherman , after raining out the first schedu led date fo r the Riverside County Juvenile Hall Auxiliary Benefit , came through with weather and the riders who came to support the cause provided the spectators with some good racing . Tom Berry had a field day as he walked away with wins in the Open Expert short track . TT and half mi le. On the short track , Berry jumped out on top with Earl Roloff and Steve Loomis right behind him .
