CA !I0731 an Steffan does it at Gripsters D-37 scrambles By Maureen Lee ELS IN O RE, CA, MA R. 19 Don Grigsby must be psychic; he started givi ng his son T vBone slow down signa ls in the Gripsters M.C .-AMA 0·37 TT scrambles 500cc-Open Expert class but to no avail: In the second moto the clutch went to jelly and Grigsby was out for the day. That first round though, Rex Hailey made T-Bone really work to get off the line and up the hill first , but once Don got out front it was adios to the rest. After Grigsby retired in the second moto it was a three-way tussle at the end between Mike Montgomery, Ed Steffan and Hailey. In the last moto Montgomery was out front for a bit then Steffan took over to win , with Hailey coming in third. The Minis were up first ; a solid class of little Yamahas. Curtis Cannon had his day , he'd get out in front and just . lead 'em in, looking like a smaller version of T- Bone Grigsby, who has a habit of doing that. Kevin Clark and Jo hn Bales had a good dice in one moto and it was Bales again in the third moto having at it with Roger Thompson for second place : Thompson won . Mario Ayers went from a win in his heat to winning the 125cc No vice main with Don Milam , th e semi winner seco nd after mak ing his wa y by Randall Howard and Mike Redd ing . Garth Beavers won the 125cc Expert class with three straight, while the results show how much shuffling around th ere was going on behind . Da rr en Hul bert took second overall with a 6-3-2 and Bud Ca rro ll was th ird with two fou rthsand a third . Tommy Walton had two seconds before he flamed out third ro und, In the 250cc Novice - class . Rick Bla n ke nship went smoothly from winning his heat to winning the main , but there are always some fun things going on in Novice classes : How John Brillinger did all the things he did on his bike in one trip around tum one without unloading really makes you wonder. Sam Burns wiped out th e rest of the 250cc Amateur class . with three straight while Tommy Walton and Chris Cannon swapped around with Mark Cain for second and third. And doesn't that National Number One 250cc scrambles rider plate look good on Jeff Springman's bike? But said bike didn't want to run and packed up in the first moto. Pete Hames also had mechanical woes, while Joe Steffan took the class with three straight. J ay Bales got second in the first moto, holding off Steve Fortune and La rry Bird . In the second moto Ba les got in tro uble and it was Dylan Neihart who took second. At the end of three motos, it was Steffa n, Fortune and Bird with Neihart fourth overall. Jim Morris won both the 500cc Novice semi and main but Allen Swett kept him busy in the main , and Don Meiner wasn't bad either in third place. This time Jay Bal es didn't have diffi culties and with a first , a third and a - se cond won the 500cc-Open Amateur class . Vince Landry (2-2-4r got second with Jack Dannenberg third. Joel Windham ended u p fourth inspite of two DNF, when he won the last moto. Last but certainly not least were the hacks. Perry Melillo a nd Karl Kroh n won with two firsts and a second place. The second came about when the team of Robert Sanner, Sr . and Robert Sanner, Jr. went nattily to the inside of turn one and Melillo/Krohn too k away first. Taking the lead in the first moto, he had heavy artillery from the rear with Kolbe Can-Am riders Greg Robertson and Eddie Cole battling for , second. In fourth, Andy Jannings was narrowing Cole's lead as a second duel developed behind him between Mark White and Goat Breker. The White!.
