Steffe n and Summers collected first and second and also the rewards at trophy presentation. Another big class of Experts in the open bikes were ready and raring to ' . go . Rex Hailey was numero uno in the first moto and the two motos to follow. In moto one , Rick Marquis , and "Elsinore Boy" from way back, held on to second. Ro b Morrison was third, keeping usual winner J oel Windham to fourth. Morrison p ulled out in t he lead from the start of moto two. Hailey and Windham were wheel to wheel for second. On la p two all three riders - we re side by side, then on the , esses,Windham and Hailey swooped down on Morrison and Hailey swooped down on Windham to finish first. I The final mota was a gut buster for Hailey. He got the jump off the line . with Windham and Rob Morrison breathing down his neck.All three riders we re riding their best and Hailey was in tip-top shape and chose .the right lines and moves , picking up the win in this race and overa ll. By Judy Greenberg VALENCIA , CA , MAR. 17 The riders of the I05cc O pen class were treated to their first international com pe tition Friday night, in the name of Derrim Porter of Brisbane, Australia , with the American Minicycle Association at Indian Dunes. Porter, the 15-year-old holder of the Australian Number One Mini plate, took the holeshot in the first moto on his newly -prepared DG Suzuki. Doug Gentry moved to his side at the tower straight, and took 'over before they reached the ess. The sharp turns and angles of the mini course were different than Porter experienced before, but by the third lap he was running hot and almost got the lead , when he took the inside of the tower turn. Gentry shot off the be rm and . kept him back. J ack G reen berg's sto ck J Suzuki held third from Jo hn McClure .until his front wheel hit a rut, giving bMcClu re the edge he needed to get by. Greenberg and David Seekins then put it he squeeze on McClure . When ~ McC l ure momentarily lost control in the hairpin , Greenberg recaptured , third. Porter pressured Gentry right down to the wire, finishing half a wheel hehind. .he The second time Porter tore out of ~ tile gate first. Ge n try took over in the same place as before, but this time Porter knew his way around. Sh owing the skill that m a de him Australia's I Number O n e , he moved back in front. Gentry lost m om e n tu m in rou g h earth , but tried to close in to take it ~ back . It was Porter's race , as he warmed up with each lap, and received a standing ovation from the crowd as he took the checkered, along with a lot of good wishes from his new friends . Kris Gangadean, and Encino Cycles' Pa t W al sh had a tight race for ' second from the time they left the gate. Ga ngadeon got his wheel in front coming out of the ha irpin, but Walsh hung close and moved by when Gangadeon wavered in the rough end of the corkscrew. The last lap flag was out as Walsh gained ground on Johnson, but Johnson had enough of an edge to win. Walsh, who had been out of racing for six months, has been getting stronger each week, as he proved in th e second mota . Once off the line, . t here was. no looking b a ck. R ick , J u ra d o tried to defend second fro m Gangadeon, but as they squeezed together in the tower tum, Gangadeon moved into second. Johnson took up battle with Jurado, but J u rado held third. Johnnie Rodriguez took back-toback wins in the Stoc k and Modified Junior Cycle J u n iors. Justin Sou za hel d second in the first Stock mota, as Marty R icka rd wor ked ' his way u p . Once by Jason Bosh , Rickard tried to make a pass on Souza and the two riders went down hard. Bosh took over second, and Joseph Matkin p ulled into third . R icka rd was up in time to finish fifth behind Charles Simmons . The last mota showed Rod rigu ez, Bosh and R icka rd the first three home. . Results in Results Section. 21
