Robertson, Brown take AME sweepstakes MX finale cash By Lee Ta ylor BAKERSFIELD. CA, FEB. 19 Greg Robertson (C-A - Kolbe) took home the lion's share of a $1,000 purse in the 250cc Pro class. Jeff Vidic (Mal -Cole Bros.) led the charge in the first moto with Mark Gambetta , on a new Kawasaki for Kawasaki of Goleta close behind. Moving up rapidly through the pack came Mike Brown. soon taking over th e lead and forcing Vidie to second. Brown went down, turning th e lead back over to Vidic , but remounted in second. Dave Haugh had a battle royale on his hands. defending third with Robertson right on his tail and Cambetta , st rong in fifth . Robertson took over the third place slot and a duel developed with Drew Nelson . now in fourth . that took th em right down to the wire . The end of th e moto found Vi die still lead ing . Robertson in second and Nelson holding third . The second time off the line, Doug Nicol (Suz -Cole Bros.) grabbed the holeshot. Vidic was right behind him with Sherman Schneller (Suz-Santa Maria Cycle Sport) in third . Heavy dicing took p lace as Vidic took the lead over Kin g Kong Jump and Robertson pushed his way into second. C losing fast , Rober tson grabbed the lead away from Vidic and held it to the end. A lot of action went on throughout the pack as Tracy Oswell . pressing hard . moved into second. Mike Brown made a spectacular mov e past Schneller and was closing on Vidic , only to develop mechanical prob lems and be pushed back in the . pack. Robertson led the pack home to an overall victory and top money. Vidic took second place money and third went to Oswell. Mike Brown , on a Suzuki. racked up a spectacular pair of back-to -back wins for the overall in the 125cc Pro class . Bob Kline started off the first moto action by taking the lead. Brown came along and snatched it away. Kline had Bobby Jones right on top of him until Jones went off the track with mechanicals. Tim Locey (Suz -DG) as usual, was burning up the track and moving by Kline, grabbed a handful and did all he could to catch Brown. J oh n O'Mara (Suz-AI Baker) took on Kl ine and, after a heavy bout of dicing, moved into third. Kurt Sofka followed suit and went on to take third away from O 'Mara. Positions held to the end of th e moto . J ones and Brown sta rted off the second moto with a rema tch ; Jones leading by a narrow margin . Once more Jones had trouble and DNF. Kline and Locey. running second and th ird respectively staged the battle of th e day with Kline emerging in second as Locey went down on the back end of the track . O 'Mara came into third and held it to the end of the moto against a flying Locey who worked his way in to fourth by the checkered flag . Brown , with an out-of-sight lead. crossed over to top money of the $1 .000 purse. L ocey had enough points for second overall and Kline took third, . Eddie Cole put his Can-Am through its paces for the overall win in the Open class . Scott Caveness (S uzO range Co. Suz) led the pack into the first moto. Bill MacLemurray (Mai Ski's Maico) pulled the lead out from under Caveness. Cole, running third . was fighting to hold off Steve Rawson. Biding his time. Cole made his move and took over the lead, hold ing it to the end of the moto . Tracy Oswell took second and Sherman Schneller took third .
