Neihart got another crack at Dob bins , and with a last ditch effort coming out of four , almost made it . Bu t since almost only counts in tiddlywinks and horseshoes he had to settle for second with R ockh a r d third . Needless to say , Leipold didn't suffer a . complete loss as Dobbins was more than happy to share his newfound wealth with him . Dob bins also had a nice warm·up for the money race with his wire-towire victory over Scott Shoup in the O pen short track. Pee W ee Gle ason had his name all over the money half mile , running away fro m the res t of the field. Mike Minnig go t his big Yamaha out second with W ayn e Ra iney a board his 250cc in third . Rainey, by the fourth lap , had moved to second whil e Minnig tried to find a line that would get him hooked up with the track. Rainey gave it his best shot bu t t here was just no contest against the well -prepared Harley Gleason was riding . When the flag came out it was Gleason , Rainey and Minnig with Leipo ld collecting fourth. Minnig's efforts were rewarded in the O p en Amateur/Expert after a shaky sta rt th at saw Terry Statum slingshot into the lead. Minnig, by lap two , ha d gotten the situation under control and nail ed down first place. Sta tum settled for seco nd. Bobby Garabedia n won the very strange 250cc Amateur/ Ex pert half mile. Off the line it was Dyla n Neihart with Ga rabedian in secon d and Don Waffle th ird. One lap la ter Neihart seized , a problem he had been fighting a ll evening. Garabed ia n took over when Don Waffle went the same way as Neihart , and Gara bed ian beca me the winner by default . The 250cc Am a teur/ Ex pert sho rt track saw Garabedian off firs t wit h Neihart second and Sta n Kinsey third. Ne ihart too k over on the second la p , and two laps lat er Ma rk Bu tler m oved to th ird when Kinsey went out with bike problems. Neihart was fighting his fickle engine but hung in there strong and held off Garabedian for the Win. Butler won a drag race to the lin e agai nst Bruce W indham for the th ird . FEB . 12 The seventh annual Calico Endu ro, presented by the Sportsman Ra cing Associa tion (SRA), was described by many riders as one of the best enduros they have ever ridden. The weather was fantastic. At key time , 8:00 a .m .. there was a bit of ch ill in the air as riders got underway. The coolness made for perfection as they work ed their machines over th e 27 .5mile first loo p . Du ring a split on th e course , th e two loope rs rode up a good -sized soft hill that en de d with a little ridge running and a deep sandwash. The one loopers rode down a fast fire road and right into the tie breaker check . Claiming the only perfect score of 0 .30 was Ch risti Acosta who rides in the 250cc class and has never trophied before . Two youngsters who ' were riding together , H ank Aul and Scot Hopkins . kept it all together by finishing second and third overall wit h a 0 .32 and a 0.40. Acost a , Au l and Hopk ins were the only zeros on the first loop that included a long rocky sa ndwash and on e good do wn hi ll. Besid es bei ng a good timekeeper , t he 27 . 6- mile second loop offered va rie ty p lus a ch allenge. Acco rding to . Joe Senn, a B over 35 rider, "T he terra in definitel y kep t one's interes t ' but the best part was that it wasn't a body or bike breaker a nd it was a helluva lot of fun ." Du a ne Mahan , an O pen B over 35 rider conquered all by being the only 0.30 perfect sco re for bo th loops . Larry Langley. th e AMA District 37 enduro stewa rd . sha red second pla ce with Sam Orrick and Bill Lockshaw with a 0.31. Langley a nd Orrick were also part of the winning "t h ree-m a n team" whose third member . Pooch. had a 0. 57 a t the tie breaker. T he su rp rise of th e day was check " E." T hi s, t he fi rst chec k on the second loo p ; was loca ted precisely at th e three- mil e marker. Many, many ri d e rs burnt t h is o ne . They had WFO 'd it ou t to this po int where they figured to spe n d a few m inutes checking their tim e equ ipment and sp eedos . Here , the three young checkers heard every com m e n t possible as riders openly expressed their feelings about this check. Check " F, " the tie breaker. was · located at 15.3 m iles on the side of a steep downhill where the course made a sharp left turn . One you ng female rider was extremely grateful that " Lil John" Henderson with IR RC was at th is check. As she came down the hill . she discovered her rear brake was gone a nd she went down pretty hard . Lil John very quickly ha d her out to the highway a nd on her way to be taken ca re of. This was on ly on e of the many eneigencies handled by IR RC (Interna tiona l Racing Rad io Crew) who is usually the unsung hero of the day. It was also at thi s check that nineyea r -old Gregory Wall was spotted riding a Suzuki 80 . Gregory was riding on line 34 and he pulled into the tie breaker a t 34.34 . Considering that minis and und er 16 yea r-o lds rarely rid e the second loop , Gregory is surely among th e riders who described th is Ca lico as "one of th e best. " The course ended with a long sanr'wash. fast fireroads and a few goou but not impossible hills . The sp eeds were fast but not too fast for the terrain . And referring to good-time keeping, just as th e enduro was over . dark clouds started coming in fro rp the south , bringing more of that wet stuff that Southern California has been b lessed with so m uch lately.
