It was Robert Grey that got th e jump on t he field in the firs t moto with Mill er out se cond and Dave R ose thi rd . By the second lap Scott Carnahan . Miller's teammate , had passed Rose to move into th ird and by the third lap he had taken Miller for seco nd . Mill er came back on the next la p to regain second but Gray was still holding on to fir st. The pressu re finally got to him on the fifth lap when Mille r fou nd an o pen ing and too k over the lead . With o ne lap to go Carnahan pulled out the stops and also got b y Gray a long wit h Lance Bu rgess a nd whe n the checkered ca me ou t it was Mill er , Carnaha n , Burgess, Gray with Bill J ewett , working his wa y through tr affic , fift h . . b T he ' fir st rnoto h ad taken its tol l. Gray and J ewett were unable to m ake it to t he line and Jeff Hollie and Carna han o nl y co m p lete d two la ps before problems sidelined them . Off the line first this time wa s Br ya n J ord a n but Miller had demoted him to seco nd by the second la p. Burgess was hol d ing down third but moved up the ladder to second by the third lap wh en he took advantage of H o ll ie's mechanical problems. Doug Lincoln , not having one of h is better nights was stu ck in traffic in fifth . On the white flag , Li nco ln took Rose but it was too lit tle too la te and he had to settle for fourth be hind Mille r , Bu rgess and Jord a n. Li ncoln's 7· 4 finishes did get him th ird overall be hi nd Miller and Burgess. • Ten 250 cc Pros were just as serious as the 125cc boys and there were also j ust as many breakdowns . Sco tt Cecil was the first one out of the ga te bu t o n the seco nd la p h e wa s o ut with mec hanical problem s. Ad d Steve Cross and Bill J ewett to the list a nd the fie ld had na rro wed to seve n . Arden H adley, a 1 new fa ce to Corona, to ok over the lea d with Phil T ho rste nsen and Bill Ch a p in second a nd third . On th e third lap Mick J acobs got into the ac t as he got by Chapin to take over third . On the next lap he did the sa m e th ing to T h o rs tense n and wa s nipping at Hadley's tailp ipe . Hadley stayed coo l a nd brought it on home. J acobs was seco nd and Thorst ensen third. The second rnot o sa w J aco bs, Cross and Mark Rawley unable to co me to the line . Ceci l and J ewett made three la ps be fore problems put them ou t. This time Hadley broke on top with Chapin second and Cecil third . With the d em ise of Cec il , Thorstensen moved into third and Joe P rice , picking up two , went to fo urth. W ith o ne lap to go Thorstensen took a chance and it paid off as he d ropped Chapin to third. The overall was the same order. I Larry Roeseler played the game of follow the leader in .the O pen Pros as Kenny Morgan and J on ny C lo p to n were content to follow him a round the Co rona h illside in the same order both motos . T he te am spirit ' was ru n n ing high and the co lors were ou t as Norco , P alm Sprin gs , P ol y and San Bernardino H ig h Sch oo ls battled for the ove ra ll tea m wi n . Norco wa s spo rti ng a brand new ban ner whi le Poly ha d th eir a rtistic' motocrossi ng bear m uch in evidence . Norco won every class but two and Po ly was the school th at picked up those and th e grizzly bear responsible for that was W arren Bell . Bell topped Danny C urtis of Norco twice in th e 100c c Sen io r class for the win ·and then turned around and did the same thing again in the 125cc Intermedia te cla ss to Robert J eralds of Norco a nd T im May of San Bernardino. Jill McIlrath of Norco back after some hard times with leg inj uri es sho wed everybody sh e is just as go od as ever as she won the Women's Divisio n , with two straight over teammate Dana Sinsle y. In th e 125cc Novice class it was Norco's Rick McCorkell who parlayed two firsts to the overall win . Alan Se eley ended in a tie with Norco team m a te David Neal for second but lost it because of Nea l's higher place finish the final m o to . Resul ts in Resu lts Sectio n . Speedway 117 to kick off HSMX program with film festival By Rod Eschenburg C HULA VISTA, CA , FE B. 13 Speedway 117 will kick off its 1978 high school motocross sea son wit h a motocross film a nd equ ipmen t d isp la y festival on Wednesday night , Feb. 22 at defending 1977 C h amp io n Santana H igh School in Sa n tee . Featured will be two ho urs of motocross a nd related motorcycle films and the a ppearance of international MX star , tu rn ed inst r uctor , R ol f Ti bblin. T he feature fil m is titled , " Motocross Safety" and covers r id ing tec h ni q ues , e q u ipment a n d seq ue nces from top m ot ocross events . Also scheduled is the film story of Don Vesco's suc cessfu l effo rts to capture the la nd speed record fo r motorcycles . Doo rs open at 7:00 p .m . with the first film sta rting at 7:30. Do or p rizes will also be awarded durin g the eveni ng . T he 1978 Spring Mot ocross sea son will b egin at S peed wa y 11 7 Wednesday nig h t , March 8: and will be known as the Coca Cola San Diego H igh School Motocross Cham pionships. Coca Cola is working with Speedway 117 this year to provid e added awards for th e high school riders su ch as team jacket s, a d ded trophies for the second and third place schools , e tc . The March 8 d ate wi ll also mark the open ing of Speedway 117's "Sp ri ng 78" CMC motocross programs. As in the past yea rs the high school riders run thei r ra ces co ncurrently with the regular program . H owever , this yea r a major cha nge will be made in the point system . W h ile riding in th e regular program for regular awards , th e high school riders will a lso receive po ints o n how they do against ea ch other o nl y. Th is system will p lace emphasis on team strategy and m ake the champions hi p a true team effort . Santana H igh Schoo l fiel ded the 1977 C ha mpions hip team a t Speed way 117 , winning ou t over 38 o ther area schools , and Speedwa y 11 7 MX Ra ci ng Di rector Bob Basile stated that he ho pes to start a yearly tradition of h avin g the d efending cha mpionship scho o l hos t th e p re-season festiva l. San tana bo asts no t o nly a very strong motocross ra ci ng club , but also of a to p m otor cycl e m echan ic's curriculum. All proceeds from the Feb. 22 program will go to Santana's MX cl u b and the moto rcycle me chanic's faciliti es.
