NMA Awards recap By Elrae Morgenthaler _ SEATTLE, WA , FEB. 6 The 1977 N MA Trail Division Enduro Series was recapped a t the annual awards presentation Fe bruary 4 in the Bell Plaza Building in Sea ttle. Eight enduros began in the mud and snow the first weekend in March. The 'Coyote', sponso red by the Roadrunners M.C . of Tacoma , is notorious for its wet cla y, This year snow added to the cha llenge for out of shape bodies. Ron Mo rgenthaler (O pen B-Bultaco Alp ina ) took to p honors in this even t. Bremerton Crui sers M.C.'s 'Spa rkpl ug ' is set in beautiful rocky soil without much mud. What makes it tough are the tight, fresh trails set up for trials bikes. Dan Brecht (250A-PE 250) bested the trialers in this event for first place. Mt. Vernon M.C . used new trails developed with ATV funds on state land for its 'Webfoot'. Steve Church (250A -Yamaha) outlasted a broken kickstarter and embarrassing fall at the start line to come home in a first place tie with fellow club member Alan Drafs (125 Yamaha). The 'Mayday' , sponsored by Everett M.C., tried new terrain for the event this year. Organizers claimed it would be a roadride. However, a short section of roots , ruts an d river took its toll of even seasoned riders early in the even t. Non -license holder, Gary Norman, rode to first place. Mt. Baker M.C.'s 'Spring' covers mu ch the same area as its 'Cowbell' in the fall , bu t it has the du biou s distinction of starting in a working garbage d ump. Ken Norris (Open B· Yamaha) , who would rather go elK hunting than ride an enduro, was a popular first place tie -winner along with repeater Dan Brecht. After b reaking for the summer months , th e fa ll season began in th e . shadow of Mt. Rainier with the 'Evil Spirit ' , spo nsored by Cross County 'Sports. In its first attempt as a poin ts event and short of cl u b m embers, wives of rid ers were called in to m a n checkpoints. In sp ite of so few people, it was a well-run event , through area most of the rid ers hadn't seen before. Ron Morgenthaler made this his second win for the season. The ' Everg reen', spo nso red b y Seafa ir City M.C. , was held in Capito l Forest, the most developed State AT V: area. Good weather and good trail conditions made this one of the most pleasa nt rides of the season. Van Rhooes (Open A-Yamaha) and Bob Hockett (Open B· Rokon) ended die l Otl -mile event in a first place tie . The finale , Mt . Baker's 'Cowbell' , ran through the foothills of the Cascades nearly to the Canadian border. This event 's contestants ' included not only endu ro regular.' ISDT rider , Charles Betha rds, but 750cc World Champion Road Racer , Steve Baker. Lyle Duronso bes ted good-buddy Carman Bunker by one po int for first place.
