The Internatio'nal course was in top shape with a few minor changes and several sand loops added for an exciting day of racing. Don Best, on h is Va n N uys Yamaha , was the Min i Expert winner. In the Min i Intermediate class, Airc~ne rid er Jack Greenb erg holeshot to wm .the first moto with a strong lead. J im Boyd bat tled with Zoli Meszaros. for the second spot , with Boyd gettmg the edge. Boyd took over to lead the second rnoto. Greenberg had control of the number two spot, with Danny Sanchez a nd Mesz aros behind . Gr eenberg moved in on Boyd as they ran from the pack, and got by when Boyd had trouble in th e hairpin tum . Greenberg finished with a I -I and Boyd a 2·2. Kevin Brewis took com ma nd of the Mini Juniors as the first mo to got underway. Mike Longmore put th e pressure ~n Brewis in the first few laps , but Brewis pulled awa y for a safe win . Longmore kep t control of second followed by Ch ip Harris , while Da vid Lamb rode his Sim i Valley Yamaha through heavy traffic for a fourth. Longmore rocketed to a fantastic lead, from start to fin ish , of the second moto: leaving the action behind him . Brewis went down in the first lap. Lamb had early control of second with Harris a t his heels . As the rider~ scrambled over th e sand whoop-de doos , Brewis came th rough to capture second. Harris , Lamb and Scott Sampson were next , with Bobby Simons winning his battle with Pat Walsh for sixth at the flag . . The 100cc Motorcycle classes seem t? grow w~ekly, with many of th e riders commg out of the Minicycle classes. Matt Whiting stretched a good lead to win the first moto of the 100cc Experts. T he second time Willie Wright took command, taking the over all with a 21 ride over Whiting's 1-2. Richard Ising steered his Premi er Yamaha to th e fro nt of a large pack of I~O cc Juniors . Roy-Comez clu ng to Ising's rear wheel until Ising broke awa y, leaving Gomez to fight off Jim Coffey. Coffey got around Gomez , and put th e squeeze on Ising, taking first in ~he last lap when Ising got into trouble m the sand. Gomez barely made it by Ising to finish second. Coffey grabbed the holeshot th e last tim e out, aga in being cha llenged by Gomez and Ising. Rick Nanas , in fou~th , had. Duke Wright on his ta il, unt..1 R . Geiger moved up in the pack taking fifth fr om Wright in mid -air as they)umped past .the tower. Coffey's consiste n tly fine rid es gave him the overall, with Gomez and Ising settling for second and third . Sim Simons headed the 100cc Intermediates in both motos and never looked back. Tommy Bence ran a strong second until he experienced bike trouble in the sa nd and pulled off long enough for Steve Dye to take over . Bence qui ckly recovered and was back for th ird. Bence and Dye were at it again behind Simons in moto two . Bence got some breathing room in the sand for second overall. Results in Results Section. . __ th e 188 riders, bu t also a spectacular show by Mother Nature, as she ' produced a real "frog strangler" of a downpour after the first round of motos . All finish positions are based on the first round results . While the No. two ranked U.S. mini) rider for 1977 - Scott Burnworth , now R&D Suzuki-mounted, starred . with wins in the Expert 105cc Mini and Stock Mini 12-16 classes with near wire -to -wire wins ; Yamaha rider Ted Brady served notice that he could be the new star of the 1978 season as he , grabbed second behind Burnworth in the 105cc Minis and Stock Minis plus a i really great ride for the win in the Expert 12 -16 Modified Mini class .q Two other Expert riders who "came to race" were Chris Morey with a third and second respectively in the Stock Mini and Modified Mini , and Robbie Nolin who notched third places in the 105cc Min i and Modified Mini classes. In the Intermediate classes Todd Brady grabbed the Stock 12-16 class win over Scott Brown, with Brown comi.ng back for a strong win in the Modified class. The 9-11 Mini classes were .completely dominated by Ronnie Lechien as he topped Jon-Jon Belisle in the Stock class and Rudy Dickinson in the Modified class. Novice competition featured twin ; wins by Terry Murray as he took the Division One 12-16 Stock class over M_a~~ Howell and then put down Division Two 12-16 Stock class winner Mike Schuringa in the Modified Mini class . In the 9-11 No vice classes Blair Hardisty and Danny Ray sw~pped I firsts and seconds with Hardisty and ) the Stock winner a nd Ray the I Modified winner. Powder Puff honors went to Denna Blyth e with a great effox: after fallin~ while leading and rcommg ba ck to mp Tammy McGuire at the chec kered flag. The Motorcycle classes were again , dominated by Burnworth as he took bot h the 100cc and 125cc In te r m ediate cl asses in eas y wins.
