Cutting low in th e turns, Br eker broke into th e lead as Ernie Hendricks took up th ird ,with Tracy Oswell (KT M-Mid ·Va lley) hot on his heels. A heavy duel was staged bet ween Nic ol and Savitski wh o had threaded his wa y up in to th ird. Morgan, -Kirker, Hubbs handle CMC Saddleback MX By Patti Firth-Trotter ORANGE. CA,JAN . 22 22 What was left of Saddleback Park was plowed. bulldozed. filled and totally rearranged for the regular meeting of the CMC crowd Sunday. The rain had definitely taken its toll on the land . some sections of the track had 10' to 15' deep ravines running through it. Open Pro riders got the first shot at the course. Steve Russell, aboard his raging red Maico was the taker of the holeshot with Ken Morgan (Yam ). Mark Rodman (Ya m) and Carl Gieselman ( Ya m) following . Ch ip Howell (H us) , John Hormuth (Yam) and Robert Shafer (Suz) were giving chase. Russell spent the first six laps trying to fend off the advances of Morgan . Morgan was successful in catching the leader on the seventh time around. Rodman was busy holding off Gieselman and Howell . On the 10th la p Rodma n seemed to be tired of being pursued and wicked it on to pass Russell. Now in secon d place, Rodeman began his assault on Morgan . Howell maneuvered into fourth with Jeff Witherell (Mai) filling fifth . Gieselman finished a head of Hormuth. In the seco nd moto Morgan got on th e ga s a nd smoked t he entire 14 laps. Ru ssell go t a seco nd place sta rt but wa s u n abl e to h old o ff Rodm an . Russell and Howell spent a few laps dicing for third with Howell emerging the victor. Russell finished the race ahead of Witherell , Gieselman and Hormuth. The overall went Morgan , Rodman and Howell . Andy Kirker was first off th e gate of the first 250cc Pro moto. Tim Lunde , on his Kelvin Franks han d -bui lt Roo was next in the parade. Tim Tolar , resplendent in his new sponsor's ga rb, Cross -Up , was next. Paul Thede ran ahead of Bill Knight (Suz) with Jim Domann holding the next slot. At the start of the fou rt h lap Lunde locked up the lead. Kirker rode the rest of the moto in second with Domann displacing Thede for third . Tolar went out with machine problems. Keith Doege (Yam ) and Bob Rutten (H -D) followed . . Kirker again took the holeshot this time with Domann, Lunde , and Tolar in hot pursuit. Domann wasted no time in taking over the lead , but Kirker was only inc hes behind. As they went through an exceptionally rough section, Lunde missed a shift and lost third. Tolar kept up his assault on the leader until on the second to the last lap he managed to get by Domann and smoke across the line first. Dornann , nursing a blown shock, wasn't going too fast. The top finis hers were Tolar , Kirker. Domann, Lunde and Rutten . Kirker , Lunde and Domann took home the top money. Gary Denton grabbed the holeshot in both rnotos of the 125cc Pro class . "Hot- Dog" Hubbs was second off the line and right on Denton's tail. Rick Maki (Suz), Cliff Lett (FMF-Suz) and Gr egg Toyama (FMF-Yam) had the next positions. Cliff and Gregg moved Rick back to fift h unt il both were plagued with machine failure . Maki moved into third, giving Gary Tomlin fourth . Gary was riding a very interesting machine, a combination of a Honda and a Zund app ... how does a Zunda sound? Mike Dickherber (Suz) finished the firs t moto in fifth . After getting a first place sta rt in the second moto, Denton was able to hold off the advances of Hubbs just so long. Pat picked Denton off and went on for the win and the overall. Denton fin ished se~ond with Gregg Young ( Ya m) t hird and Toml in again crossing the fin ish lin e in fourth. Results in Resu lts Section. Johnson, Buck roost at USMRA MX By Carol Campbell ELSINORE, CA ,JAN. 22 Phillip Johnson rode to an overall win in the 125cc Intermediate class at Elsinore Raceway. His competition was heavy and he had his work cut ou t. It was Barbara Spielman who got th e holeshot with Johnson , George T uck (Yam) and Terry Randel (Su z) righ t be hi nd . Sp ielman's lead was short lived whe n she was plagued by bik e prob lems be fo re the end of the firs t lap. Johnson took up th e lead on ly to be pa ssed by T uc k on the whi te flag lap. Johnson tried every move possibl e to get around Tuck but to no ava il. The second moto found Terry Randel ou t in fro nt for the first lap until he d ecid ed to chec k ou t the other side of the berm in the Svturns, Johnson was now in first a nd T uck was right at Johnson 's ba ck d oor bu t Johnson ro de a n a lmost flawless race and was a ble to fin ish with a 2-1 for first overall , T uc k ( 1·2) fin ished second and Terry Randel fin ished third with a 3·3 score. The firs t mot o of th e Pee Wee race found Jim Mal ott ( Ind) with th e lead and Eric Herrara (Ind), Frankie " Icem a n" Buck (Ita) and little Tina Teilly (Ind ) close behind. Buck made his move on Herrara and then set his sig hts on Mal ot t. When th e checkered flag came out , it was " Icem a n" Buck who took the win . Buck got the holeshot in the second moto a nd th ere was no sto p ping him . It was a wid e op en throttle and a lot of determination that led Buck to th e overa ll win .
