But after on e la p was co mpleted , he had moved up to start working on Reir. McCoy passed Reir on ce , but Reir d ialed him back on an uphill and proceeded to motor away. McCoy managed to pull a big ' lead on th e Intermediates but wa s u nabl e to challenge for the lead again . Willie Miller put his Suzuki into the first j Intermediate position followed by another Suzuki ridden by Matt L orenzo , Yamah a-mounted Cory Cantaloupi; David Reade , Rick Ryan and Perry Cole. all riding Suzukis. The second moto saw Ryan d oing much better than in th e first moto. He beat both th e Experts th is tim e. Reir . finished in the second spot a nd McCoy fini shed fourth b eh ind R eade . Cantaloupi rounded out th e top five . Reir took first overall in th e Experts; McCoy was second. Rick Ryan had a 5-1 tally, good for first . Reade (4-2) took second and ahead of Cantaloupi (3-3). Aksland, Bad Brad receive honors By W.H. Spencer SAN FRANCISCO , CA ,JAN. 13 At the annual awards presentation by the Motor Sports Pr ess Association , both Br ad Lackey and Skip Aksla nd were fet ed fo r their 1977 efforts to wa r d t he motorsport scene. Lackey ea rn ed the first -ever award for Motocross Racer of th e Yea r , for his GP effort and Sears Point Trans-AMA win . Skip Aksland was awarded the Motorcycle Racer of the Year and joins mentor Kenny Roberts , Dick Mann , Mert Lawwill and Mark Brelsford in th e honor. His defe at of World Champions Barry She ene a t Long Bea ch a nd Steve Bak er at Laguna combined with the di rt tra ck m ile Na tio na l win at San J ose made it a n easy choice. Skip topped off the night in front of nearly 150 TV and sports writers and broadcast ers by awarding his father . Cliff, a Best Pop of the Year awa rd . Douglas goes from MX to Cross .Country By W .H. Spencer HOLLISTER. CA,JAN . 15 Philly Douglas gave a very good account of himself and , while admitting to a little luck. put the hat over two big-time cross- : country riders with style and speed ab oard his A·I Maico . Charlie Marshall and Gary Vanderpool , locked in a battle for the top plate in the 0 -36 Cross Country category were the victims. The current monsoon season virtually eliminated ra cing as the rivers rise. This accounted for the less than 100 riders for the Los Gatos MC presentation . There wa s perfect traction at the upper ran ch of Hollister Hills 0 HV Park. The sixmi le track had no real mud holes and no significant mud , just great traction . Open cla ss riders went out last , with two hours to run . This meant eight laps , with an interesting start of all three classes . The first four corners saw nearly 10 % of the riders eliminated in crashes. Phil' J acobsen split his tank and Vanderpool bent h is front forks, b ut continued with little damping. Ray Hinson ran over a Novice and broke a shifter a nd watched the rest.
