(Yam) finally got first overall with Brian Gottschalle (Hon) having to work hard for second. Bri an Talbot (Yam) took third . Expert Pfetzing (Yam) and Jeff Moon (Yam) had alot of work to do to fin ish in that order. Novice 250 had alot of new riders who gave the regulars a run for their money. Greg White (Yam) slipped byJohn Throne (Yam ) to take first , and Mike Margoles the 250 took third. Sam Burns (Su z) got it all together and smoked the 250 Amateur/Expert class . Burns has had bad luck lately. Out each week, but bike problems ha ve done h im in . This time his luck changed and after a hard fought battle with Sperry, he walked awa y with first plac e , leaving Sperry second and Blankenship third. Open Am a teur/ Exp ert had Sperry taking first with Bruce Boyd (Suz) second , and Smith th ird after a n eck and neck battle all th e wa y. The Sweepstakes T u rkey ra ces wer e for two big birds. The course was run backwards with each cl as s handicapped p er size . In the lightweights, Pfetzin g got the first bird with Sperry taking the second b ird .in the Heavyweights. Emde wins Open GP, Baeder goes down in flames, By Jim Lester RIVERSIDE, CA , NOV . 20 Over 300 riders 'showed up at Riverside Ra ceway for the final AFM road race of the season. Dave Emde's.Zbflcc Yamaha took the early lead in the Open GP with Mike Baeder right on his tail. But when EII}de went wide on th e banking at the,cend of the first lap, Baeder sneaked underneath to grab the lead. Emde repassed Mike by the chicane, b ut as Baed er chased Dave onto the banking on the second la p, Mike's . Yamaha seized, crashed and caught fire . The race was halted. The flames were extinguished. And Mike limped back to the pits. Emde shot away from the restart . a nd grab bed a healthy lead , but a llo wed Richard Seifried's 750cc Yamaha ,to close the gap in the last ., I • • ., l ' . I • • couple laps. Seifried passed Emde in the fina l turn of the last lap, but got into a 100 mph speed wobble , giving Emde time to win the drag race to the finish. In the 250cc Gran d Prix, Randy Mamola and Keith Code (practicing on a TZ350) were first off the line foIlowed closely by Emde and Eddie Lawson. Code (who earlier had won the 500cc GP on his 350) passed Mamola just before the banking on the second lap and pulled away from the 250s . Emde closed · the gap between himself and Mamola to a few b ike lengths by the finish . Lawson dropped out , moving Daytona-bound John Glover into th ird. Protests erased the victories of all the winners in the 550-750·0pen Production race. Open class leaders Dave Emde an d Lee Fleming, both Kawasaki mounted were disqualified for using special disebrakes, mo ving Lee Gerke's Moto-Guzzi up to first . Emde got some consolation by taking the bike to victory later in the Superstreet race. Newton H ild ebrand and Rich Cox were disqualified for modifying their exhaust system s, gi ving Go rdon Se im the 750cc Production victory . Martin Sachs was disqualified after leading th e 550cc class, which gave th e win to Greg Thompson , last ye ar's Open Production champ. Alan GingereIli led th e whol e 410cc Production race on hi s Rust a n 's Yamaha, but Dick Fuller's Sy Klops Yamaha stuck to him like glue until Bryan Cathey , Scott Clough , Dain Gingerelli , Ed Toomey, Thad Wolf and Dean Cognito took turns running second through sixth. The 200cc Production race provided the closest finish of the day with the Can- Am twins, Gordon Seim , and Lee Gerke, separated by inches at the checkers. Seim , this year's overall Production points champion, raised his victory total for the day to three with another win in the 250cc Production. Bill Mullins' Can-Am and Tom Burba's Yam blasted away from the opposition in 125cc Production . Philippe DeLespinay defeated Doug Draper, who won this year's GP points title, in the 125cc GP . By the time the ninth and tenth races rolled arou nd , it was starting to get dark. Dave C a n n on and Eric Pa loheimo were the class winners in the Box Stock race. There were bo und to be scoring problems as the head scorer admitted, "It was getting too dark to see the rider's numbers ." Ray Straka had the secret of his second place finish : "I just foIlowed Dave Cannon's taillight." Results in Results Sec tion .
