Gerig, Sofka and Tripes decimate AMCMX By Chuck Burris CARLSBAD, CA , NOV. 20 The American Motocross Club (AMC) had an unreal race day at Carlsbad, The track was changed a little and to some was rough - but to most it was Carlsbad at its best. The Open Pro riders went first and David Gerig (Suz) took the holeshot with Doug Boyd (Mai) and Dan Steele (Yam) behind. Gerig kept on cookin' and stretched out a lead over secondplace Boyd , while Steele was holding down third . In the second moto Gerig again took the holeshot but this time Steele moved into the lead and went all the way for the win with Gerig second and Steve Fry third, Kurt Sofka (C-A) showed no mercy in the 250 Pro class. Kurt got the holeshot in the first moto, left the pack and went on for the win while J ack Keese (Suz) took second and Abian Lelevier (Mai) finished third . In the second moto it was once again Sofka with th e holeshot and a farewell to the pack as he went on to the win with Abian second and Jonas Gaaf(Yam) third. The 125 Pro race was dominated by Mike Tripes, riding for Escondido Suzuki. Tripes got the holeshot and instantly stretched out a good lead. Nick Hale and Scott Anderson diced for most of the race and at the finish Anderson was only a bike's length behind second-place Hale. In the second rnoto Tripes did it again, with Hale second and 12·yearold pro Rick Johnson riding for Lucky ' Yamaha finishing third. Results in Results Section. Lewis, Sperry win at Perris 'STITT By Phil Wulff PERRIS, CA, NOV . 12 The Perris Raceway High Point Series second week got under way on the short track with the 250 Novice/Expert class going first. 3Q T erry Singleton's Ammex (sponsored ~y ~!o n.es MX Pro~~cts) t~~k tqe.. lead on all three rnotos and never relinguished it. Novice Bruce Heiland (Yam) got second with Ch uck McConnel (Bul) third. Mike Redding (Yam) brought out a new racer and was having trouble with sorting it out, still taking a fourth . Open Novice was, a real battle with many positions exchanged. Dan Rees (Bul) had trouble on his starts but threaded his way up through the pack to chase after Greg Beloit (Yam) . Beloit held Rees back to take the first moto. Rees got it together in the second and third motos to really show how its done. Rees took the overall with Bill Kinsh (Yam) second and Dennis Pinheiro (Suz) in th ird. The Open Expert class had three riders really getting it on for those hard- earned points. John Sperry (Suz) took the lead in the first moto with Jay Lewis (Yam) at his heels and Tom Heard (Suz) right behind Lewis. The moto ended with Sperry in front and Lewis second and Heard thi rd when he slid out. Second moto was a white knuckle ride for all three as they each had a lead for awhile. Sperry led at the start the n Heard got by for a la p a nd then Lewis took over to the finish . Spe rry got by Heard for second. Lewis got a grea t holeshot an d never gave up the lead in race thiree, Overall, Lewis to ok fi rst with Sperry second and Heard third. The small mini class was again taken overall by Rob Hassay (Yam). Eddie Rock (Hon) would get the lead but Hassay would always get by to win. T he TT scrambles were really good a nd a lot of riders are going for those points. The Open Novices were a la rge class with Gary Johndro (Yam) and Greg Beloit (Yam) really dicing it out. Johndro and Beloit were really going at it in the first moto with Dave Destler (T ri) holding third . The second moto had Johndro with a long lead and Destler in second. Bill Bartels Jr. and Beloit were battling for third and fourth. The third rnoto started with Beloit getting a good holeshot and holding on for two laps till he slipped up and Johndro got by to take over. The overall finish was Johndro, Beloit, and Destler. The Open Expert class had the riders going at each other in every turn . Sperry had to work hard to sta y ahead of Pat Dobbins (Tri) and Vince Laundry (Ya m) . Sperry held evervbod v off in all of th e mo tes to ta ke' first' overall. (Below ) John O'Mara was a little rad ical in the 125cc Pros, Gosse/aar starts winning AME MX weekend By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, CA , NOV. 25 Mike Gosselaar (YZ-Van Nuys Cycle) racked up b ack-to -h ack wins for the overall in the 125 Intermediate Division Two class at the American Motocross Enterprises (AME) Indian Du nes nig ht motocross, starting off a weekend winning streak, coming back in the 250 Intermediate to take fourth for Steve's Bultaco and then returning Su nd a y to a clean sweep in the 125 Intermediate Division Two class. In the first moto , Gosselaar .was leading wit h Chris Bercaw (Suz-Cole Bros.) in second holding off C .J . Stanley (Suz-A ircone) . Bercaw went d own and a super tight race developed between Da n ny Diaz, now in second , and teammate Stanley. These two fought tooth and nail , with Diaz holding Stanley in third. Gosselaar ended-the moto way out in front. The second time around, Gosselaar ag ain grab bed the holeshot with Steve Mithcell behind him in second ' until Ri ch Thomas pushed his way into second a nd started chasing Gosselaar. Thomas had Craig Buelna up behind him and fough t him off throughout the mot o. Diaz was solid in fou rt h . Gossela a r won top honors, Diaz tu rned up enoug h points for seco nd overall and third went to Thomas. Willy Simons (Yam- DG) rod e to top money in the 125 Pro class after a hard night ofracing. In the first moto, he had a lot of moving up to do with John O'Ma ra (Suz -AI Baker) ou t in front in the lead , Jerry Shore running second and Paul Lane in third . O'Mara opened up a bit of a lead as Simons got by Lane and set out after O'Mara . O'Mara had his hands full with Simons, now just inches away, hounding him down to the wire . By the end of the moto, O 'Mara was still the leader with Simons taking second and third going to Shore. The second time off the line, Joe Root took over the lead with Lane in second and Simons closing fast in third. Root went down at the top of t he hill and Lane took over with Simo ns right on his rear tire, Coming up out of the gu lly Simo ns took over and started to open up a lea d for himself. Chip J ohnson was now in third and putting pressure on La ne. Sim ons grabbed top mo ney for the night, Lane did well enough for a secon d overall and third overall went to Johnson. The 500 Pro class claimed Steve Richard (Yam-Simi Ya m) for its overall winner and welco med Greg Torgerson to the 500cc ranks. At the start of the first moto, T orgerson b lasted off the line into the lead position . He had Richard running a close second. The tw o b attl ed t h ro ughout t he mota with Mik e Rochester badgering both of them . The second time off t he line , Torgerson once more to ok control with Rochester in second and David Rogers (Suz·CRC) in third, Richard took over third and was breathing down Rochester's jersey. Making his move , Richard took over second an d both he and R och este r moved by Torgerson. By the end of the race Ri chard was solidly the winner with Rochester taking home second place loot and third going to Torgerson . Doug Nico l took top 250 Pro honors with back-to-back wins. All night long Rick Guilmette and Dean Perry, along with Rick Cavish were locked into a " never say die" duel for second, Gu ilmette emerged second overall and Perry took home third .
