On the second lap Smith was third and the third time the riders came around he was breathing down Steele's neck . Dan went a little wide in the hairpin and Alan blasted by him and started putting the pressure on Chaffee . While Chris and Alan were wide open com ing off the downhill , the Husky dusted ' Chaffee and Alan was the leader and th e winner. H is lead by the mid point in the moto was unbeatable. Steele, Maxwell , Chaffee and Tim Tolar (Ya m) settled for the next po ints . " I Chaffee got the moto two holeshot, Dan Steel e took th e lead away from Chris by th e end of the first lap and Smith took it away from Steele on lap three . Smith sm oke d and Steele finished second with Tolar third and Maxwell a nd Chaffee finishing next in th e parade. Alan and his Darth Vader Droid were the ~ig winners for th e Open Pro class. Open Pros saw smooth-riding Chris Chaffee (Yam) taking the win in the first moto with Marty Moates second and Top Shelf Restaurant's rider Dan Steele third. In the second moto Steele got the holeshot and diced with Marty until the last lap when Moates took over , getting the win and the overall. Results in Results Section. Randy Lyall had a winning day with a pair of back -to-back Amateur rnotos. Art McNamee took an easy second. Dick Varvel followed in third. Don Jensen of the Novice class really sparkled in first. Dan Ca sson scored second with a one and a two . It was the J.D. Bray bunch in third. The teamwork of Jim Warden , Dick Doyle, Randy Lyall and Monte James took the gold for the team race of the day . Old nmers cross it up at IndIan Dunes Smith takes CMC win on Darth Vader Husky By Betty Bird By Patti Firth-Trotter VALENCIA, CA , NOV. 20 .28 CARLSBAD, CA, NOV. 27 Indian Dunes Cycle Park, California Racing Club and 44 members of the Old Timers MX Association provided a hard-to- Randy "The Rocket" Hess smoked his Suzuki off the gate to begin the 125 Pro action. Randy was WFO for the entire 14 laps. Mike beat combination for . exciting competition. Master class winner "Movin' Marvin" Olson rode like an ex·pro. He worked. hard all year and has improved with every stroke. He moves that Maico as if he was late for dinner and has a smile that could pay taxes. The Masters class showed Olson first, Andy Anderson with a back-to back second and AI Dennler in third spot. The Expert class found old smoothie Cal Browning taking the gold with Ken Williams fighting for top points in second. Will Geery Steiner please stand up? Gerry never loses his sense of direction but he has trouble with his vertical and horizontal - he knows every track by personal contact but never gives up or loses his sense of humor. Tripes aboard a DG-prepped Suzuki filled the next slot in the lineup. Brian Myerscough (R&D) and FMF Suzuki mounted Jeff Ward had the third and fourth well taken care of until Brian experienced his usual rotten luck at Carlsbad and seized his mount on the first lap. Ward moved into third and started putting pressure on the leaders. Hess was not going to be stopped by anyone. Randy was turning 1:47 laps on the muddy course with Tripes not too far behind. Rick Johnson (Yam) finished the moto in fourth after Ward. Tripes took his turn at the holeshot in the second moto. Hess. Myerscough , Ward and Johnson were close behind. Mike held onto the lead for the first four laps of the contest and then succumbed to Randy. Hess' Ied for five la ps before a busted chain forced him out. Tripes took over as leader while Ward was busy taking care of Myerscough and putting him back to third. Again RickJohnson had to be satisfied with a fourth place fi~ish. Tripes took home the overall WIn. Steve Bauer and his new 250 DG Suzuki was the star of his race. Steve swooped the holeshot and the lead for the fastest race of the day. Steve is usually part of the 125 pack but has decided that a bigger bike might be for him. Danny Weir (Kaw), Loren Hall (Mon), Wes Sutton (Suz) and Gary Trusdill tried to keep up with the DG flyer . Hall was quick to displace Weir and was able to hold onto the coveted ' second spot until Arden Hadley came from the back of the pack to take over . Steve Rhyan, who has been riding a very fast KTM , borrowed a friend 's box "stock Suzuki today and really took care of business. Steve got 16th place start and started picking off the riders until he locked into second. Hadley and Hall finished in the three/ four slots with Randy Hess (Suz) next. Bauer blasted off the line for another holeshot and complete domination of the moto. Randy Hess rounded the Suzuki tower tum next with Rhyan, Sutton and Abian Lelevier (Mai) in hot pursuit. Rhyan roosted around Hess to complete the race in second. Hess rode a strong third , keeping Hadley and Weir in fourth and fifth. When the race was over Steve Bauer was very excited and said that this was his first CMC Pro win . What is black, has a 17-inch rear tire and has to be one of the most sano looking pieces of machinery around? A brand new Husky. Alan Smith is the first of the local riders to be aboard Cold weather and hot bikes, that was the climate for the third week of the High Point Series at Perris Raceway. Short track action saw the m ini class with a good turnout as Rob Hassay (Yam) took his usual first on the short track, and newcomer Ronnie Wulff (Ya m) second and brother Phil third . The 250 /0pen had a lot of riders going for the brass with Ross Klatt (Hon) , Greg White (Yam) , and Bob Pfetzing (Yam) exchanging positions all the way and finally ending up in that order. A super battle is developing each week between the 250 Amateur/Expert riders. John Sperry (Suz) , Terry Singleton (Ammex) and Rick Blankenship (Kaw), are getting lines down pat and putting on very close elbow to elbow racing. Sperry held the first and second moto with Singleton third until the last lap. Sperry got by with a very determined move. Sperry took the first overall with Singleton second and Blankenship third. Open Novice has Baron Bibee (Yam) doin' his thing to the others and taking first with Greg Beloit (Yam) having a good ride to take second and Joe Morabito (Yam) ran in third. Open Expert had Sperry, Marty Smith (Ya m) and Dylon Neihart (Yam) goin' forit with gusto, and a lot of seesaw changing of-positions. Sperry took first with Smith seco nd and Neihart third. • TT Scrambles was large and had plenty of good riders trying for points. The racing is really getting heavy as the riders are seeing their points start to accumulate after only three weeks of riding. The minis are starting to fly now. Wulff (Yam) racing for the first time, ran away from everybody. Dean Blake ran next in second with Ricky Galatiote third and another newcomer to racing, Mike Conklin, bringing in fourth . The 125 Novice/Expert race has the largest number ever to show, and the racing was c lose! Dale Whitemen
