Wing flies at Clark's Branch MX By Lynne Diltz GLENDALE, OR , NOV . 6 Eleven mini bikes and riders, a good turnout for the steep , natural terrain slopes of Clark's Branch motocross, provided close Scott Henden wins final Holy Roller race By Gary Morris PULSBO , WA . NOV. 5 Suzuki-mounted Scott H enden took the Pro class win at Holy Roller Park near Pu Isbo (located across Puge t Sound from Sea ttle). ..26 Henden's smooth style paid off in wins in both motos, leading the way around the rockless natural terrain track . The Open Amateur race was on e of the day's best . Dave Schee lar (Yam) combined a second-place finish in the first moto with a win in the second to take the class . Bu t Henden's and Scheelar's wins were overshadowed by the fact that this was the last race ever for Ho ly Roller Park. Fo r the past seven years, the people of Christ Memorial Church of Pu Isbo have held motocross races on Saturdays for the purpose of having fun and devel oping sportsmanship. They have worked hard to pu t on races tha t did not have the pressu re an d "e very man for hi mself' competition th a t th e big tracks have. Ho ly Roller Park has done m uch for the sport and will defin itely be m issed. T he small park has succumbed to the pressure from land develope rs and an unsympathetic county commission (Kitsap County). The church people are not bitter, but instead look at the positive things their park has done for action through both rnotos on a muddy track that got dusty befor e day's end. Seth Malkon (Suz) came up with two firsts and Karl Talburt (Ya m) finished 2·!I for a second , after a see -saw battle with Matt Hayes (Yam) . Rick Lee on a Motomotion Yamaha captured fourth with a !I·5. Another big 125 J u nior class ran two hea ts to split to A and B divisions. The Huffman Br os. , Ro d and Mike wer e split apart by Wes Roberts for first , second and third , all riding Suz ukis. Larry VanHoof worked his way from a bad start to fift h in a super fast catchup race on ly to have time run out before he cou ld get around fourth plac e Mike Briggs . Mike Zillgitt's doctor would ha ve flat come unglued if he could have seen that bo y win the 125 B division on \ another Mo t o mo t i o n vs p o n s o r e d Husky. Mike broke h is leg last sum mer and is riding in a barrel cast. The unscrambler moto saw Zillgitt and Bryan Clark go down in the pit berm wh en both tried - for the same line. Zillgitt's 10th place finish placed him in the B sect ion and he d idn't let any grass grow , coming out of the first turns and jump in the fr ont of th e pack and staying there . Dave McAlister worke d his way from eighth to a third behind J eff Tunno. Douglas County Motor Sport sponsored Randy Wing took first place money in the 125 Expert class , second place money in the 250 Expert class and bombed in the winner-take-al l money race because his 125 Yamaha: had just had enough for the day . T re ve Mc Reynolds (Yam) mad e his long trip from Klamat h Falls payoff when he won the money race after a battle with Rick Huffman (Suz) . Low Cost Cycle rider Bru ce Smyl ie whipped to another 250 Junior A win which gave him a total of !l600 po ints and an automatic move to the ex pe rt class . Wendell Diltz , back on a bike after a year's absence, had a ra ce to Washington , won the Elderl y Gents class after a ba d go -d own over the downhill jump whe n he and Butch Jubera tangled handlebars in mid-ai r . That was jubera 's second downer and he go t th e Crash and Bum award for the . day. Jubera had overshot a downhill berm . he a nd his Yamaha parted co m pa ny some 20 feet up , Jubera landed first and the bi ke cont in ued another !l5 feet down the hill . Clark Gardner waxed the Open cla ss on his'Medford Yamaha scooter. Doug McCornack and Wade Stamp fin ished th ird a nd fourt h after a close ra ce all lOlaps. Results in Results Section . Hocking & Schlag smoke the Experts By Tom Anderson BRENTWOOD , CA , OCT. 28 the wir e with John Roberts leaving Scott Christensen and Gary Bault to finish fourth and fifth . Bault ha s also been away from racing for a year. Bob Abel pulled off a first in the 250 Junior B with Ron Hartsfield close behind. Doug Feldkamp held the lead in that race for three la ps before bike trouble sent h im to the pits. Motomotion again - that Medford outfit can make bikes go, and Larry Hooper's Maico powered him to a 250 Expert win . There's a bounty on the 17 -ye a r- o ld Hooper at Medford Motocross - it started one weekend when Motomotion said they would pay $50 to anyone who could beat Hooper, and wou ld add to the pot each time . And , if he's beaten by a rider on a Suzu ki or a Yamaha , the dea ler for those two bike-makes will add $25 to the pot. David Reimer on a Big Y Yamaha finished third behind Randy Wing and Medford Kawasaki rid er Glen Lilya na iled down fourth in that 250 Expert ra ce. Reimer's dad , Elmer, a name wellknown to t r acks in Oregon and Mini bikes were great tonight with a full line up in the Intermediates Division. T he local lad from Byron, jamrnin' John Looney was on the ga s, tun ing up for the big ra ce at Indian Dunes. Rodney Smith beat J ohn in the firs t m ot o but could n't keep th e J ammer back in the second rnot o . J ohn took th e overall. In the Min i Novi ce class Rick Olson ( Yam ) got a 1·2 for th e overa ll win. Mick ey Lane ge ts fast er every week . Phil Wells reeled in Mickey in th e first rno to , but when the second one came about . Lane captu red the lead and never let up until the ch eckered flag. In the 250 Expert race Wes Morrell led the first moto until he crashed . leaving th e win to Joey Schlag. J oey was re all y pumped for the win . Proving the first rnot o was no fluke , J oey led until Wes passed for the lead , but Joey was not to be beat again . He passed Wes and rod e hard the last few laps for th e victory. Dan Castl ehan o wa s o u t Fr iday night and beat a ll th e 125 Exp erts with second pla ce going to Mike Miller.
