NO V . 6 The BOSS MX annual benefit race for the National Motorcycle Patrol First Aid and Rescue group was , as usual , profitable for the Pa trol. The money th ey received will be used to purchase su p plies to be used on th e inj u re d ri d ers they atten d. Howeve r . what N .M. P. needs now , eve n more t h a n su p plies . is n ew members. In a special featu re race in th e a fternoon portion of th e day's program. Patrol members took to the track en masse for their own ra ce. They did leave a few no n -ra cing members around the course to ad mi nister first aid if needed . The riders in th is ra ce were varied , as were the b ikes. Some min i b ikes. some street bikes, some men , some women . some kids . some no vices , some less t ha n n ov ices, o ne ex pert and two int ermed iates. In an effort to psyche everybody up for th e big race , promoter Fr ed Dion showed off th e gig a n tic trophy th at would be given . T hen to even ou t th e possib ilities for all riders , th e ex pert, Ma rk Hilton . a nd the in te rmediates . BretJoyner a nd Dr . Al Baumann (also Vet eran Ex pert) wer e tu rned a ro un d bac kwards as we ll as b e in g handicapped by abo u t 10 yards . T he ha nd ica p must not have been enough . for Hilton ( 175 Yam) swep t around th e whole pack of 14 by the seco nd turn after the start. Joyner on h is R M 370 Suzuk i followed rig ht behind Hi lton . a nd th en ca me Doc Baum a n n . It stayed that way for the rest of the race . The mi ni riders stayed to wards t he middle of the pack , a nd the "less than novice" riders took up the rea r. At the end of the race . all the riders were called toge the r fo r the t ro phy presentation . After a short speech. Dion presented the trophy to J ess Gu yton . . . the last pla cefinish er! In t he more serious ra cing of th e day. it was another clean sweep for th e Dirt Werkes team . Donnie Canta loupi wh o a lso rides for Yamaha, sna gged top m on ey in both th e 125 and 250 Pro classes, whil e teammate Brian Jod ry topped th e Open Pros on a Mai co , and took second cash in the 250 class on a n Ossa . The 125 Pr o rnotos were th e most excitin g rac es of the d ay. Dan T urner (DG) a nd Cantaloupi put on qu ite a sho w as they raced hard all th e way fr om sta rt to fin ish . T hey too k turns lea d ing the first mot o , a lthou gh it was al ways Ca nt a lou pi in front at th e la p chec k station . The race co u ld have been scored like a box ing ma tch , givi ng one or the ot he r credit for th e best sho w ea ch la p. Coming down the h ill toward th e fini sh flag Turner was in fro nt . bu t Ca nt alou pi pulled off the win with a su dden b urst that put him half a whee l ahe ad a t the line. T hird p la ce , Bill Ja m erson (Su z) wa s 45 seco nds behind th e leaders. J amerson had also put on a go od race . H e had a bad sta rt a nd worked h is wa y fro m about 10th in th e ea rly laps to th e third finish . The second moto started much th e sa me as th e first with Canta loupi a nd Turner re a lly di ci ng it out in fro nt. Turner lost some ground wh en he spun out. but by the end of the race he was rig ht ba ck up th ere for another tight finish . but couldn't take th e lead awa y from Cantaloupi. This time Jim Mulv ey (Suz) was in th ird . a great distance back. Cantaloupi and Turner picked up the first and second ca sh . th ird go ing to Mulvey and fourth to J im Wooten (Suz) . The Motor cycle Patrol has in itia ted a new program whi ch needs support. They hav e ope ned a n accou nt with Northern Ca lifornia bl ood b anks. They will mak e the blood avai lable to be drawn by a ny moto rcyclist , racer o r not . o r to t he fa mi ly of a ny motor cyclist. The ge nerosity of all th e merchants who d onated the numerous con tinge ncy p ri zes sho wed t hei r support of the N .M .P. T hey . and a ll th e riders and spectators are to be commended for keeping th e Patrol funded . ( Pa trol m embers a re and rece ive no voluntee rs, compensation for thei r work at th e ra ces .) NOV . 4 Rick Hocking got the hol eshot . in the first Open Expert moto with Phil Anderson (Yam) second right on Hocking's tail. But the corner wh ich has been a p roblem for Anderson took him ou t with a big "ge t off." J im Foley had to la y his bi ke dow n to keep from ru nning over Ph il. So H ock ing won the first rna to with Cu rt W ilcox second . T he final mota was a bra nd new race . Hoc king gra bbed the lead with Foley and An derson on his rear wheel. Foley would try to p ass Rick in the b erm turn wi t h Anderso n m ovi ng inside and a lm ost passin g . Abou t th e fou rt h lap , Hock in g b it th e dirt. Foley and Anders on both passed a nd had th eir own race . In th e final poin t ta lly Hock ing took th e win wit h W ilcox second. T he experts ran the trophy dash with the ra ce going th e opposite way. Hocking won . but not without a big duel fr om J im Foley wh o p assed Hocking but could not hold Rapid Rick ba ck . Big Jim Hartbauer had his Yamaha wid e ope n out of th e berm . but as he ca me down th e home stre tch his motor b lew up . leaving th e Vet s win to Chuck Watson . Louis Shapiro won in th e Old Timers di vision on his big Bultaco , Da n Cast leh an o took ho me all t he bucks in the 125 Experts with the heav y co m pe ti tio n co mi ng from Mike Bro wn .
