The Senior A class will be made up of amateur and expert sections ; the Senior B class will include beginner and n ovi ce sections. The annual Champions hip for each class will be decided by the four best rides out of six events. This trial was the year's first Senior ro und . Five riders competed in the Senior A class with Gil Smith (Bul 350) in first place with 48 points and Bob Grove (Bu l 350 ) in second pl ace with 54 po ints (t his was Bob 's first time ba ck in action 'a fter a year and a half) . The Senior B cl ass had a good tu rnout with I I ride rs ; Art W ebster (Yam 175), with a determined ride, took first place with 59 points, Bill Markham (Hon 350 ) was second with 74 points, and Bob Saltys (Bul 350 ) a nd Glenn Buyers (Bu l 350 ) tied for th ird with 81 points: Glenn blew it by one less clean! Moving on to the rest of th e trial , Greg Lersch (Bul 350 ) enjoyed a great 20 -point ride for first place in the Expert class. Ga ry LaPlante (Kaw 300) was right in there for second place with 25 points. The Amateur class was won by Mike Allen (Mon 348), with a hot 33-point ride; David Moon (Bul 350) was pretty warm himself wit h 37 points - second place. Snowden Ma thews (Bul 350) was not dabbing around when he took first-place Novice with 29 p oints and Bruce Davis too k second with 41 points (Bru ce now has enough transfer points to move to amateur). Ron Ben ig a r (Ho n 125) captured first place in the Beginner class with 17 points and George Avery (Mon 350), bum ping Ron's rear tire Lersch nabs P10nkers ATA trials By Bill Markham TRABUCO CYN. , CA , OCT. 9 Greg Lersch (350 Bul ) wasn't puttering around in the Expert class at the ATA Plonkers Trial , • when he took first place with 39 points. Anthony DiLabio (350 Bu l) was second with 74 po ints and Mark Webster rook th ird with 83 points. The Amateur class was won b y ca lm . cool , collect ed Greg Bu yers (350 Bu l) with 31 points. Second place was cap tured by Rick Bien iak (350 Bul ) with 45: Brad Spea rs (175 Yam) was th ird with 53 points. Rod Campbell won the Novice class wit h 0 points! (App are n tly he d idn't , want to ge t his boots d irty.) Jack Weir (350 Bu l). Scott Head (250 Suz ) and Mark Bernbaum ( 125 Bul ) decided to complicate matters by ea ch making a "one-point " ride - cr ea ting a threeway tie for second . The tie-breaking ride-off required th e three com petitors to ride Amateur Section 14 under the eagle eye of veteran chec ker Ed Mills. Jack W eir took it; giving Scott Head third place a nd Mark Bernbaum fourth . The Senior class was won by Gil Smith (350 Bul ) with 34 points. Marv Russell (350 Bul ) took second with 46 . Beginners also wound up with a three-way tie: this one for first place between riders Wayne Emge (175 Yam), Rod Markham (125 Hon), a nd Bruce Williams (250 Yam) - all wit h five-po int rides. The tie was decided by th e number of cleans. gi ving . Wayne Ernge ( 18) first . Rod Markham (17) second , a nd Bruce Williams (16) third. This goes to show that to win in this sport you have to clean up your act! Mike Lauxen captured the Kids class with seven points and Mike Tincup took second with 12 points. The Begi n ner and No vice Sect ions were a bit on the easy side yet fun for the riders; section three included two logs to be ridden over plus a couple of sharp turns. Experts had to prove their mettle when exiting section eight with a hard right and then straight up a 30foot bank (some of the bikes m ade it wit hout their riders!); Greg Lersch was the only rider to clean that one: Section 10 asked its amateurs and experts to d uc k under a large branch. Rick McCabe and David Moon forgot to duck! Section 11 stood alone as "uncleanable " throughout the trial.
