Two laps later Rick Ga ge moved by Sparks, on ly to have his shift lever fall off, leaving Rick with a poor selection of gears. Sparks came by for the win , Medly passed the slowing Gage for second and before 30 m inutes had gone by , "Puddly" Hickman passed for third leaving Gage with a fourth for moto one. The second rnoto was ' off with Sparks ta king the holeshot to a win , with "Puddly" taking the second spot for the moto and the day . Rick Gage too k third, which was good for third overall. Results in Resu lts Section: Jim Foley returns By Tom Anderson BRENTWOOD , CA, SEPT. 23 Experts had som e new riders with Phil Anderson back after a la yoff, but they couldn't keep the ' pace with the loc al heroes. Wes Morrell had to win the final and Joey Schlag took second honors . In the O p en Intermediate a nd Novi ce , little K. T . Barry ro d e his fat her's big Yamaha . He sm oked both motos and won with ease. Mike Gann won the Novice class with Mike Rippy second. Pa t Kelly d ia led in the 250 Novice class with a win in both motos. Jammin' Joyce of Byron is back now that her shoulder is healed . She ha d the lead all the way for her win, with Kim Bri tz second. The real duel came in the Expert Veterans. J im . Hartbauer had some stiff competition from Jim Foley, who hel d bla ck plate # 1 in the early 1970's. Foley had class C tires on and they didn't work . He still ran second. Fo ley said he would change tires and be back next week . .Mike Crooks won the Vets Novice class. He rides a fast Bu ltaco out of Dam Cycle Cent er in EI Sobrante. Brent Davis is improving each week. Brent was beat out by the fast Suzuki ' rider Laroy Deleon, with Brent hot on his tailpipe for second. Results in R esu lts Section. Werkes Riders take the works By Sallee Hilton HELVETIA , CA , SEPT. 25 Donnie Cantal oupi (Yam) and Brian Jodry (Mai) , just signed on to the Dirt Werkes R&D team, made the Ivers Brothers glad 36 they offered the sponsorshi p. Cantaloupi also rides for Yamaha and FMF. It is not difficult to understand why this young rider is so sought after. He not 'only won top cash in both the 250 and the 125 Preclasses, but led every lap in a ll four motos. Brian Jodry (Mai) has been on the comeback trail after a long slump. The assistance from Dirt Werkes will be m uch "a p p r ecia ted . and Jodry intends to see that the Ivers don't regret taking him on . Jodry took top money in the Open Pro class , led every lap , and com p leted the W erkes team clean sweep. Second overall in the 125 class went to Danny Denn is on a borrowed Yamaha . In the first moto , Dennis and Don Ferraro (Suz ) di ced all the way with Ferraro taking second at th e finish. Troy Werner (Suz) was fourth. Ferraro was running second again in the second moto but crashed. Dennis, after a bad start , spent the entire race picking off one rider after another , and worked up to a second for the moto , and second overall . Ferraro, also working up th rough the pack , made it to fourth , ea rn ing third place pay. Steve Gary (5-6) cashed in fourth . Results in Results Section. Record setting Salinas ST final By Burt Dinner SALINAS , CA , SEPT. 18 Record setting performances highlighted the final event of 1977 at the Salinas Airport Quarter-mile races . Spectators saw the track record broken several times with Rusty Davis ' 16.49 the newest record . Expert Davis took both the 250 and 360 classes in his quest for number one short track rider in northern Ca liforn ia . Jeff Nichols, up from the mini ranks, had a double, winning the Novice 100 and 200 events. Duane Spence, a grandfather of a month, made the right moves to lead the 500 experts to victory. Resu lts in Resu lts Section . Intermediate Kageman mixes it up with the pros at SactoMX By Sallee Hilton SACRAMENTO, CA, SEPT. 23 Put a Swede on a·Swedish bike and you get a winning combina tion! T om Kageman , after a coup le years of mediocrity on Suzukis, had his loyalties revived after a visit to his homeland and got a Husqvarna. Now h e is a very noticeable rider. In the Open Pro and Intermediate combined race, Kageman looked better than some of the pros did , although he is an intermedia te and fairly new to that class . In the first moto , Kageman had the lead by the first turn and held out against pressure from Jerry Barrick (Mai) for mo st of the race. Barrick made it around the Husky with two laps 'to go . Lance Beauchamp, 'a lso a Husky rid er .ihad a bad start and had been fighting h is wa y through the intermediates, finall y, getting by Kageman right at the white flag , and then going on to take Barrick as well . Kageman grabbed the lead again in the second rnoto, and Barrick was chasing him again . This time Barrick crashed and Beauchamp moved in to chase, but Kageman wasn 't go ing' to let anybody by him this time. He left Beauch am p to hold off Barrick and went on to th e win, actually lapping one of the pros. The third moto start ed with Kagerrian out front again thi s time with Beauchamp right on his tail. That was th e story for th e whole race until Beauchamp got aro und in ,the final lap. Beauchamp took first money in the Pro class a nd Kageman go t a well deserved trop hy as firs t intermedi a te . Pat Snyder (Suz) , Da ve W ood (Ya m) and Dan Waller (Suz) fro m Truckee each had a moto win in th e 250 Pro class . The first moto was Sn yder's all the way. The pros fell into formation off the line with Waller, Wood and . Mark Hilton (Suz) followi ng Snyder. The follow ' the leader game was disrupted only in the last seconds of the ra ce when Wood slid out and Hilton went around him to cop third. The second mot o sta rt ed out Sn yder, Wood a nd Hilton . Hilton cra she d and Waller mov ed int o th ird . Sn yder and W ood fought it out for th e lead all th e way through the moto , but at the checkered flag Wood was in front with Sn yder right behind him . Gary Shipley (H us) had moved int o th e third . position. Snyder was out front again in ' the third moto, this time Waller was there with him dicing for the lead for half th e race before he managed to take over. Hilton and Wood had a good race going for third with Hilton finally laying claim to that spot and catching up to Snyder but was unable to pass before the finish . Snyder came out on top, with Waller taking second money . The 125 Pros also had a little trouble with some heavy pro-looking intermediates on the track . Their first moto was as it should be , with the pros out front. Dave Wood (Suz) the leader was followed by Kevin Henry (Suz), most of the way until Rick Woodson' took over second. John Land (Suz), an intermediate , started out leading in th e second moto until Woodson took over. Woodson didn't get ve.ry far ahead , and Land was still right on his tail at the finish , with the other pros behind. The third time out there were two intermediates out f~ont all the way . Kevin Ichimura (Yam) and Mark Greene led the pros to the finish. Resu lts in Results Section. Sudberry wins • • semi pro series By Patty Piston CHICO , CA, SEPT. 17 John Sudberry took a third in the final race of th e semi pro series at . Cydeland Speedway, racking up , enough points to take top money. Getting th e hol eshot in the semi pro event was Ken Gray , who held the lead to the ch ecke red flag . Second p lac e went to Jeff Fowl er who was under co nsta nt p ressu re from Sudberry in th e bid for seco nd . T h ings got pretty hectic in th e 200 cc junior eve nt with rid ers falling like domi noes . A restart was requir ed in lap two when Cl int Egbert , Chuck At ki nson and Keith Williams sp illed. T he ra ce was sto pped agai n two laps later wh en Egbert went down in turn one again and four m ore riders hit th e dirt in turn four . Aft er the dust had cleared the _ winner was Troy Cummings (who led all the way) followed by Jody Patterson and Dale Hansen. Results in Results Section. Newman short track survives -rainout By Ann Carr N EW MAN , CA , SEPT. 16 Only 100 flat trackers dodged t he showers wh ich dotted the Central Valley and Ba y Ar ea to night , but sh ort track competi- tion at H ill's Ferry Raceway continued as scheduled . A wide blue groove greeted racers, and most responded with good rides . ' Fourteen-year-old J imbo Felice _ fro m San Jose - still jazzed following his Pioneer win last ' week - again smoked a star-studded field of 250 Experts. In a main event which saw payoff spots go to riders all under the age of 16, young Bob Cunnington held a strong second over former mini # 1 Brian Thompson. Old timers such as Alex and Kim Jorgensen must be wondering if th is m ini program is okay after all. Former mini riders Jeff Maso n and Dennis Anderson also ripped off first places in the 125 and 500 Novice mains . Jeff beat out Monterey's Jeff Nichols (himself just graduated from the mini expert ranks) while Anderson top ped th e most consistent 360 racer Rick Almeida of Antioch. New faces reaped the 'bucks in the 500 Expert class as Pat Krzrarich (pronounce that if you can) and Bob by Robicheau x (t hat one isn 't easy either) beat out the troops in the main event. Bobby's brother Kenny couldn't get goi ng in this one and usual charger Jeff Haney tangled with a hay bale in practice and will be mending a broken collar bone for the next few weeks. Hill's Ferry will close out its short track season at Newman with a final event on October 8th. Resu lts in Results Section. Sullivan blitzes Pioneer short track final By.Ann Carr OAKDALE, CA , SEPT. 17 Dimin utive Rodney Su llivan ' of Distri ct 35 fame showed the way around Pioneer's short tra ck with -su per b rides to win the 125 and 250 Exp ert mains . High point 125 Expert Duane Snell and Blendzall Special rider Mitch Davidson stayed with Rod in the heat , but money time was a different story as Sullivan worked up from the back and then blitzed . In the 250 main the Riverdale youngster - following a semi 'tr a nsfer - hooked up with "J orgy" Jorgensen and current short track point leader Rusty Davis . Rod and Jorgy swapped the lead several times before Sullivan's Yamaha moved to the fr ont to stay. Al ex settled for second ahead of Da vis, Felice, an d Thompson. Pi on eer high point winners Richard Arnaiz (250 Junior) and J ohn Tavis (500 Expert) celebrated by winning their respective mains. Arnaiz beat out Yamaha men Matuzek and Spencer , while Tavis finally topped Rusty Davis in the 360 main and then staked out that beautiful brass for John , Sr. in the 500 main. J oh n , Sr. is still recovering from injuries sustained at the last San Jose sportsman half mile. Women made their presence known as Kelly Parker won her first 200 main event on that trusty Carabela . Perseverance is paying off for Kelly . She ha s stru ggled through th e mini ra nks and . that experie nc e is helping her in the 200 class.
