Joe Burke wen t home the big winner by sweeping fou r motos and both expert classes at Freddy Van's Cycle Land in Pittsburg , Ka nsas. Despite the lim ited number of 125 Experts , th e first mota was actjon packed. Drew T albot (Suz) grabbed th e holeshot around the first tu m with Sh annon Ni day (Su z) and Burke (Su z) righ t on his tail. On th e th ird lap , Burke passed Niday and went after Talbot. Pushing by two laps la ter, Burke pulled out a fa irl y secure lead , The last lap proved unrewarding for Talbot as Niday blitzed by do wn on e of Pittsburg's long straightawa ys for second. Second mot a action started with Burke in the lead , followed by T alb ot a nd N id a y. Bu rk e found th e go ing easier th is mota and put distance betwee n him self and the other two. N id ay p ressu red T albot for second, b ut lost it in a bermed t ur n , remou nting to h old down third. Near the en d of the m ota , Niday a lmost got Talbot , but out ca me t he checkered and the order of finish was: Burk e, Talbot , and Niday. On the line next were the 250 Experts, looking hu ngry. Burke (Suz) came off the line well a nd by the end ' of the first lap was ' pressu ri ng the leader Treadway (Ya m) ahead of a hard-charging Mark Hull (Yam). On th e third la p, Burke went by both fo r th e lead. The next lap saw Hull's undoing as he tried to pass both Bu rke a nd T readway for t he lea d , but fell a few feet later. By lap five, Bu rke was on Treadwa y's rear fender and finally go t by on the big uphill, securing first place, The second 250 Expert mota proved a winner for Burke as he pulled a holeshot over Hull a nd Tread wa y, By th e hal fwa y mark both Burke and Hu ll had moved well ahead of eyeryone else and sta rt ed a d ice of their own . W ith only a few laps re m ai ni ng, Burke pulled away from him and won by a large margin. Re sul ts in Results Sec tion. TSCEC Enduro: Bostic wins series; Sanford tops enduro LUBBOCK ,TX The Lubbock Trail Riders scored a big double by playing host to the awards dinner for the '76-' 77 "Texas State Championship En duro Circu it" and to the first enduro of the '77-'78 season the following day, At the dinner awards were given to the top 10 riders in each class based on points earned in seven of the 12 runs in the '76-' 77 season. T op awards went to : Pent on rider H en ry Bostic, Overall class A Sta te Champion ; Hond a rider Bru ce Rose , O vera ll class B Sta te Cha m pion ; and Can-Am rider Lvnctte Po ol , O verall Wom en 's Sta t e Champion . For Bosti c th is was his seco nd S tat e Ch ampionsh ip. H e ca pt u red the top honors in '75, and as a two-tim e winner , entered the T exas endu ro rider's H a ll of Fame. Lynette Pool, a lready a member of the Texas H a ll of Fa me won the W omen 's Sta te Champions hip for the third tim e . Upon a cce pting her award , Lyn ett e a n no u nced her retirem ent fr om T exas circui t eve nts. Instead of ridi ng, Lyne tte will devote herself to esta b lishi ng scoring procedures to be used a t all circui t events, Can-Am and Penton aw arded new cycles to Pool and Bosti c resp ect ively, for win ni ng th e Seri es Championship on thei r marques. On Sunday, 829 riders started the first enduro of th e '77-'78 Texa s State Championship Enduro Circuit. The run was d ivided into three loops with a 20 mph average a nd several odom e te r re -sets to make things interes ting. Of particular interest was a re -set tow ard th e end of the run that had riders setting their odomet ers back. This m ean t wh en a ri der approached a ce rtai n point in th e run , a nd assu ming he was on time, he wou ld insta nt ly be six m inu tes la te . T heoretica lly, a rider di d not d a re approac h that poin t early. If a chec k was placed there, the early points lost wou ld m or e than off set the advantage gained by going into the section early. In m ost T .S. C. E.C . runs , the under 16 and Women', classes ride a portion of. the total run a n d then take a short cut home . The Post run was no exception. T he first two loo ps were la id out with this in mind and CN ~ l-< V ..c o ... u In Ka nsas. motocrosse rs and t ornados bo t h destroy berms, o presented a fai rly ea sy run for all co ncerned . In the third loop th e layout crew got down to bu siness and p ut arrows through th e na stiest territory they could find . W ith the exception of a few top p lacing riders it became a kn ock -down drag-ou t end u ro with su rvival in th e min ds of most riders ra th er than tro p hies. Factory-spo nsored Honda rider Don Sanford zeroed the co urse but sta ted he d id so d ue to check p la cem ent. H e was behind several times but each time managed to get back on schedule before a check. Bos tic , last year's state champ , dropped four. Perry Davis d ro pped five. Many riders felt the 20 mph average was too fast. They were probably right as I I riders were carted off for body repai rs. ' • Our "factory team" stands behind a bunch of hot numbers.
