Gustine's Charles Pettit and Concord's Dennis Houser staged an elbow to elbow battle both heat and main of the 80 Junior class in a fin e exhibition of close racing. Pettit made no mistakes to take first. Newman's final short track will be October 8th. Results in Results Section. Talcum trail and MX Jump mix with Fool's Gold Road Enduro By Mike Kinsella LIVERMORE, CA ,SEPT. 24 ·25 Kawasaki rider Hawley Slayton and his passenger Denise Bartels took both the overall victory and the Open class trophy with a perfect zero score on the Fool's Gold Road Enduro. The two da y, 497 .8 · mile course ran from Livermore to Carson City , Nevada and finished back in Livermore. T he California Enduro Riders Association laid out a good . challenging route over som e of northern California's most scenic countryside. . On the first day the riders skirted Mount Diablo and headed into the San Joaquin Delta. The narrow levee roads and old bridges that spanned the waterways were ideal for working in to the rhy thm of a long trip. Beyond Walnut Grove . the roads led straight through fields and orchards until the course took the riders through a series of left and right turns over the checker board road patterns of the valley. The ' 124 riders and passengers had hit three checks so far and they had another in the foothills near Placerville before crossing over th e High Sierras by way of Echo Pass . They began rolling into Ca rson City·Genoa around 5:30 p .m . at th e end of th e first day. Refreshed and relaxed from a nigh t a t Carson City's va rious ho t spots, everyone reassembled at 8:00 the next morning an d began th e climb back over the mountains. The hairp in tu rns through Ebben 's Pass got the blood mo ving on this frosty morn ing and the A rt ie-Alpine sce nery d rew many riders to a stop at vantage po ints along the rou te to enjoy the view. Not the best way to sta y on the -minute, but worth the time a nyway . In a few hours the riders were coming out of the foothills and head ing west whe n the pavement ended and a n eigh r-mi le stretch of loose, powdery di rt road bega n . The C.E.R.A . was to learn that peo ple who ride full dress road bikes with po lished ch rome and shin y fenders do not enj oy trail ridi ng - especially th e road rid ers whose front ends washed out and sent them nose first int o six inches of California 's finest taclum , The road eventually turned to hard packed dirt , then gravel and finally black top , but the .su r p r ises didn 't end there . Everyone was cooking now after th e little "off road" section and very few riders were ready for the MX jump that lay hidden just beyond a rail crossing down the road. The dip in th e road at th is point got quite a few big 750s airborne. A few more frantic pilots careened through the whoop-de do in modified TT slides when they hit the brakes at the la st moment . Fortunately, th ere were only m inor scrapes and a few obscene remarks d irected towards C.E.R.A . The route finally . brought the riders through Altamont Pass and back to Livermore where it all ended. Everyone professed to having a sm ashing good time regardless of the few inconveniences. Mike Raymond (BMW) and Da ve Sull ivan (BMW) shared the Open Solo trophy. Phil Hazard (Hon) and his fellow rider took the 350 Passenger class tropHy . The Oakland M.C. took the participation award and th e Salinas Road Knights took the Man Miles award . II A field of 176 'riders gathered at the Peaceful Cove motocross track , for the annual champion. ship race. The 125 Expert class finally got a clean start, after two tri es. with Kenny "Flying Burrito" Gollagoes taking the holeshot . Nevada's Kenny Frost cla imed the second spot, until the fourth lap. when both of the riders collided at the bottom of "Clu b house Jump. " Gollagoes got the worst of it as he retired for the moto . Fros t remounted. but was too far back to do any good . John Kaufman picked up where they fell off for the win . with Jeff Sinsel taking the second spot, Th e second moto saw Loren Shockey taking the holeshot to an ea sy moto win . but a first m o ro DNF didn't help his overall position. Frost took second, but the big money winner was Sinsel who took the overall by placing 2-4 for the overall win. Everyone who was an yone was at the track for the 250 bout. Ken Medly grabbed the first moto holeshot onl y to fall before one lap had gone by.
