Second place overa ll ho nors went to Cherry Stockton . a nd h er Yamaha YZ250D , and Rhe Helms, pi lot in g a RM125 . • Goat beats Rocke t Rex in Corona upset By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA , SEPT. 9 Goat Breker, riding his heart out Friday night , took on Rocket Rex Staten and both were surprised by the outcome. Plus the fans were treated to the most professional racing th is sid e of th e Superbowl. Rocket Rex blasted off to tak e the 250cc Pro lead with Breke r in ho t pursuit. The se pa ratio n betwee n Staten and Br eker was about th ree b ike len gths , but Staten wasn't able to stre tch it any. Breker was like a d og hanging onto a shirttail and wasn 't a bo u t to let go . As they came ou t of the hill side and hit th e new stadium who op-de-des, th e two flew in formation as if atta ched by in visibl e wires. Danny Jean and Keith Dysert were running in the th ree , four spots but all eyes were on Staten and Br eker. As the white flag ca me out neither rider was giving a ny ground. They were still wired together as they hit th e chec ke re d , with Staten getting th e win . The second rnoto the excitement was thick en ough to cut with a knife . Br eker's Husky had just had a new engine put in it th at day . The gate fell and it was Br eker out on top a nd going for it. Stat en was second and the distance between them was a lmost exactly like th e first moto . Breker was ridng like he has never ridden before and the fans were loving it . St aten was putting the pressure on, but Breker wasn 't having any. As the checkered ca me out after what must ha ve seemed like two hours to Breker , the win was his. Both riders . were tied in points, which gave the win to Breker by virtue of his first place fin ish on the final go . Steve Bauer , D G sponsored , continues to dominate the 125cc Pro class as he almost wire-to-wired both motos. Jon Friesten had the lead coming off the lin e in the second moto, but Bauer took care of trat . Results in Results Section. McCoy makes good at Sprockets MX By Lee Taylor BAK ERSFI ELD , CA , SEPT . 17 . Monte McCoy sta rted the nig ht off with his first of two victories in the 250 Pro class, and ca m e back later in the even ing to cinch the 500 Pro ra ce. Da ve H augh hol esh ot th e first moto with McCoy hot on his heels in seco nd . Tracy Oswell was runn ing th ird and moving up on McCo y. Kippy Pierce was ru~ming fourth , wa iting for a chance to bid for th e lea d . McCoy mo ved on alongside H augh over Can Am Hi ll a nd got by in the next turn . Tony DeLaTorre was comi ng u p fast in second aft er passing Haugh , who was glancing down at ' his' rear wheel and slowing co nsidera b ly. Pierce m oved up on DeLaT orre's tai l. T he re was practica lly a tr iple p hoto finis h , wit h both Pi er ce a n d DeLaTorre side by side, high off the final turn , co mi ng up on McCoy. McCoy hel d t he lead , DeLaTorr e a nd Pierce finish ed second and thi rd res pe ctively. . Next time ou t , Gr eg Torge rson took off wit h Dou g Nicol in second and McCoy th ird . T orgerson fe ll back as Pier ce took th e lead and McCoy m oved into second. N icol almost sp illed but m a de a beautiful reco very .a nd m a intained th ird . Pierce and McC oy, old ra cing foes fro m Flori da , had a duel for t he lea d th at co nt in ued right down to th e wir e. As th e checke rs came, ou t, McC oy crossed over behi nd Pierce, b ut finished well eno ugh for the first over-all. When the gate d ropped for the 500 Pros, McCoy was th ere fo r anoth er victory ride. Ste ve Rawson took cha rge off the line with And y J annings in seco nd a nd McCoy in th ird . Taking Can Am Hill wheel to whe el , charging into turns inches apart, McC oy got by Rawson. They rod e a mad cat and mouse game for the next couple of laps . Rawson and McCoy traded th e lead . Jeff Stubblefield was ha vin g one of his finest rides as a Pro. He was solidly in third and challenging Rawson relentlessly. Once more , Rawson m oved by McCoy. McCoy was go ing wild , takin g turns high on the outsid e , but he cou ld not take Rawson with th a t lin e . Finally, in th e white fla g lap , McCo y m ade one fi na l stab at pa ssing Rawson . Even with over-shooting a berm , McCoy fina lly gra b be d th e lead and held it. , Second time around, Jerry Asher jumped int o the' lead. Rawson took THE BIG BIKE S AR E COMING! And along with th~ American Motorc ycle Assoc iation's high speed two wheelers-the . circ uit's top and toughest riders. The record breakers . The big boys.
