In the first moto , Corey Boga ne's Wheelsmith Motorcycles Maico was really cooking. He proved to be a hair quicker than the' Tebbs flyer this race and ended up taking the first wave of the finish flag from the CRC flag-girl. In the second and final moto, Tebbs had the control over the race and he led easily straight for the win wh ich gave him a 2-1 finish for the d ay and the overall 500 Expert win . Bogane landed a close second in the final race and second overall for th e day in front of R ick Brown and Don Glover . Resu lts in Results Secti on . McCoy moved in for th e lea d with Rawson staying in close and Jannings was secu re in third . 250 Intermediates had o ne of th e fastest sportsmen races of th e night. T hro ughou t the first moto , th e field was pa cked tight. Wally Koch . th e winner. had the only breathing room around, In the second moto , Steve W illiams took the lead with Chris Mallory running second and Tim Schmidt in third. Again the field was pa cked solid from third place on back . While Williams held the lead for the entire moto , Mallory and Schmidt battled to th e wire for third. At · the end Koch earned first overall . Williams second , and Mallory third . Jerry Shore won the 125 Pros after a night of heavy racing against John O'Mara and Kirk Sturgeon. In th e first moto, O 'Mara led with Shore right behind him . Andy Guth had heavy competition for t h ird from Kirk Sturgeon and David Strong. O'Mar a , cutting a turn too close, was thrown back in the pack as Shore too k over th e lead . A hea vy duel for second was fought bet ween Guth and Sturgeon. These two were side by side all over the track. Strong. in fourth . was staying right on top of Guth, wheel to wheel . tossing third back and forth like a hot spark plug. Strong sta yed in fourth. O'Mara again took over the lead with Sturgeon in second and Shore third : Shore and Sturgeon battled with Kippy Pierce right on top of the m . Coming up out of the gully' Pierce went down and was set back in sixth. Pierce managed to get by Strong as Sturgeon continued pressing Shore for the lead. As the checkered flag came out. CA . SEPT. 11 The Dura-Lube sponsored racing team oeMonte Lee and Mike Johnston claimed first overall at Adelanto in SRA's team race. Jeff Yoder's partner Mike Beirma n got the holeshot then found he had forgotten to turn on his gas, Gary Auberlen was second off the line but ended up pushing his Yamaha back to his partner, Andre Thalman . when it began having electrical problems. W .C . Thornton. Gary Sigmans' partner. had a great start but got so engrossed in battling with Ken Thorall that both riders were several miles off course before realizing they were racing alone. At the end of the first lap Monte Lee had already began to put some space between hi m a nd second place Lan ce Tubbs. Stirl ing Hopson and John Foster we re running third while 'Iron Man' Mike Cole was fourth. Tubbs b roke bot h his KTM and Bria n Ben net ts Yamaha wh ich pu t them out of the running and Mike Cole moved his way up to second p lace where he stayed for the entire 96 miles . Twenty-one-year old Cole, who rode and pitted himself. is used to these long races. He races most of the SCO RE races and used to race single seat dune buggies. Bro thers Wayne and Danny Garrett seemed to come out of nowhere to take the third place away from Hopson and Foster who finished fourth , first 175 . Kirk Kentile and Claude Maynard cla imed the fifth spot while Up -Tire ' Husky's George Erl and Heath Hibbard took sixth over all and first 125 . Erl, who has just returned from a Husky sponsored trip to Sweden. likes this type of raci ng and uses these events to prepare himself and his little Husky for the Baja 1000 km. The bright spot of the day was that Warre n had just received word fro m the producers of the new movie "Do it in the Dirt " that he was chosen 10 double for Frank Sina tra Jr. who plays the starring role of a desert motorcycle rider. • Altliough there were many father 'a nd son teams . the most unusual one was the team of Prater and Pra ter. Eleven-year-old Jason was on an 80cc while his father . Flo yd . rode a 250 . Results are pending but the Mini team was won by the Senn brothers, Kevin and Keith and first 200 Amateur went to Ray Sanchez and Jeff Vroman. . -Rainey hits tor two in Corona flat track By Elaine Jones CORONA . CA . SEPT. 14 Wayne Rainey came back after a successful tour eas t and was still riding high as he collected .the dough in both the short track and half-mile . In the short track Eddie Lawson got th e jump and led for one lap before Wayne caught him . The half-mile saw Dan McWho rter off on lOp with Mike Tidwell second and Rainey th ird . By the second la p things had cha nged considerably as Rainey had taken over first with Charlie Summers moving into the second and Craig Armstrong third . Tidwell was still in it back in fourth while McWhorter. apparently havi ng problems. was fifth . Lap three again saw a change in the order as Ra iney still held a solid first but Armstrong and Tidwell had moved into the two. three spots. with Summers dropping to fourth and McWhorter still fifth. Problems took McWhorter out on the fifth' lap . Lawson flat socked it 10 them in th e O pen Am/Expert half-mile, leading it from wire to wire. Gary Jones and David Skirvin had one heck of a battle for second. changing places like a woman changes her mind . In the end jones got the nod and Skirvin settled for third . Ti dwell cooked in the 250cc Am /Expert ha lf-mi le. His acci dent earlier in the year hasn't slowed himat all and he proved what a professional he is. Jeff Sp ringman. who ha d owned this c1as the last few weeks, ha d to play follow the leader and hope for a m ista ke. Unfortunately this doesn't happen often where Tidwell is concerned , and Wednesday was no exception. Rob Selvy got by Terry Singleton the third la p to take ca re of third . Scott Polson surprised a few people in the 250cc Am/Expert short track when he jumped to an early lead over Terry Singleton and Ronnie Ray. Not about to give it up. he held off a late ' cha rg e from Rob Selvy, who came from last to collect the second. Singleton went out with p roblems on the sixth lap giving Ra y the show spot . Joel Windham a lmost pulled the upset of the night in the O pen Am/Expert short track . J oe l (an a mateur) led Steve Fort u ne a me rry chase for five la ps before Fortune could not only catch hi m. b ut also get a rou nd amateur Da vid Skirvin , He m ade it, but it was one heck of a race before he did .
