'~ ~l 10 When the banner dropped after a one- hour ambulance delay it was Mark Zoller (400 Yam) leading the stampede to the bomb with Davies (400 Yam) following closely. Bill Conroy (400 Yam), " Bad" Br a d Henson (175 IT) and Lonni~ Peterso n (400 Yam) , were ~ll r~nmn.g ab,?ut parallel for the thu d. spot With Mike Co le (250 KT M) running fourth . Shortly after th~ smoke. the co urse swung up to the nght for a ways and then ~ooked ~o t~e l~ft a?d back .down creating a ha ir pin suuauon and It was here the problems began. After the leaders had gone through this section and started leading towards Galilee Hill, they began spreading apart . Conroy, still running approximately third . noticed he was being over co me by d ust. This dust ca me fro m about twenty" riders .who had cut this section short. Co nroy was rather upset by this and dropped out of t he race. . , Zoller began to stretch hIS lead slowly but surely over Davies and it was clear sailing the rest of the way around . /' As expected, the first ri d er to complete the first 25 miles was Zoller-iT doing so in approximately 22 mi nutes: d Forty-five seconds later came Davies . and not too far behind was Peterson.~ ~' Zoller pulled in and gave his bandolier I~ to partner Phil Stumbo (400 KTM) who wasted no time getting o.n course. Heath Hibbard (400 Yam) set sail out of the pits after Davies brought the team a ro u nd . Peterson handed off to fell ow Sodbust~r Chuck " Bulldog"~"l Fowler (400 Yam) a nd began chasing the leaders. Through nex t was Cole with teammate Dean Kirk (250 Hus) . . headll~g out for loop num~er two. A short tlm~ later. Henson.was In to trade c~ores with . TIm Plant (175 DMG ). Dlr~ctly behin d P~ant and Henson ~as novice Br et Cushing (250 H us). Mike Hood (2 50 Yam) took over for Bret at th is point and p roceded on his way. ' Shortly after leav ing the pits, at approximately the first checkpoin! . Stumbo's scooter dropped out of d ie :l race with unknown maladies. This moved the team of H ib ba rd and Da vies into the lead where they stayed forthe remai nder of th e race . JJ
